High school roundup for Jan. 17, 2025: North Hills beats New Castle in clash of 1,000-point scorers

Zach Pollaro led all scorers with 32 points and powered North Hills to a 69-65 win over New Castle in Section 1-6A boys basketball Friday night.

Nathan Schanbacher added 20 and Jackson Long finished with 11 for the Indians (5-10, 4-4). Kai Cox scored 18 points, Ralphie Blundo produced 15 and Damian Harrison had 14 for the Red Hurricanes (12-2, 6-2).

Pollaro and Blundo each reached the 1,000-point mark during the game.

Allderdice 61, Brashear 24 – Lukas Stead scored 22 points to help Allderdice (7-8, 5-0) to a City League win. Nasir Thomas led Brashear (4-12, 1-4) with nine points.

Apollo-Ridge 71, Mt. Pleasant 46 – Zane Beatty went off for 33 points to lead Apollo-Ridge (4-12) to a nonsection win. Brayden Myers added 13 and Alexander Clawson had 10 for the Vikings. Cole Massari led Mt. Pleasant (0-15) with 23 points.

Aquinas Academy 72, St. Joseph 53 – Jake Guillen scored 19 points, David Zaharko added 15 and Sam Duer contributed 12 to lead Aquinas Academy (13-2) to a nonsection win. Ben Bartolovic scored 14 points and Gabe Maltese added 10 for St. Joseph (6-8).

Bentworth 49, Riverview 21 – Chris Harper scored 20 points and Ben Hays added 12 to lead Bentworth (6-8, 3-5) to a Section 1-2A win over Riverview (6-8, 4-4).

Beth-Center 65, Mapletown 29 – Parker Amos scored 19 points and Jason Zellie followed with 17 as Beth-Center (8-7, 5-3) rolled to a Section 3-2A win against Mapletown (0-13, 0-8). Lucas Stevenson scored 12 for the Maples.

Carlynton 68, Cornell 30 – Damien Holloway led all scorers with 22 points and Devonte Dean followed with 19 to lead Carlynton (7-7) to a nonsection win against Cornell (1-11).

Chartiers-Houston 43, Fort Cherry 35 – Justus Buckingham scored 17 points and Nate Gregory added 13 to lead Chartiers-Houston (13-2, 7-1) to a Section 3-2A win. Shane Cornali scored 14 points for Fort Cherry (7-7, 5-3).

Derry 51, East Allegheny 45 – Stanley Rajkovich led all scorers with 30 points as Derry (9-5, 6-1) beat East Allegheny (3-11, 0-6) in Section 3-4A. Cedric Mack scored 17 and Jaden Patterson followed with 12 for the Tigers.

Elizabeth Forward 66, Southmoreland 30 – Daniel Spence scored 16 points, Tyler Basic added 13 and James Gile finished with 10 as Elizabeth Forward (12-3) beat Southmoreland (12-3) in nonsection play. Noah Felentzer had 10 points for the Scotties.

Ellwood City 78, Freedom 48 – Aaron Lake scored 22 points, Kaleb Servick had 19 and Chris Smiley added 14 to lead Ellwood City (9-6, 5-2) to a Section 1-3A win. Justin Shegog scored 24 points for Freedom (1-11, 1-5).

Geibel Catholic 83, Propel Montour 46 – Evan Strimel led all scorers with 32 points and Eahn Stevenson added 11 while Gary Tarbuk and Mike Miller each finished with 10 as Geibel Catholic (8-6) cruised to a nonsection win. Markai Porch scored 27 to lead Propel Montour (2-5).

Greensburg Central Catholic 56, Frazier 37 – Brady O’Rourke scored 15 points to pace Greensburg Central (13-1, 7-0) in a Section 1-2A victory. Brant Alekson produced a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds for Frazier (3-12, 1-7).

Greensburg Salem 53, Yough 29 – Tyler Martin scored 18 points and Braedon Leatherman added 15 to help Greensburg Salem (4-9, 3-4) to a Section 3-4A victory. Jaiden Dixon-Bretzel scored 12 for Yough (1-14, 0-6).

Hampton 47, Plum 45 (OT) – Jonas Cupps scored 22 points and Gavin Guinn added 10 to push Hampton (9-6, 5-2) to a Section 2-5A win. Will Beckner scored 17 points and Max Grice had 11 for Plum (7-7, 3-4).

Imani Christian 82, Canon-McMillan 43 – RJ Sledge and Markus Williams each dropped 14 points to pace Imani Christian (8-5, 6-2) to a Section 2-6A win. Desean Gordan scored 12 while Deston Hubbard and Kieshaun Demus added 10 points apiece for the Saints. Michael Detrich and Roman Koenemund each put up 13 points for Canon-McMillan (3-11, 1-7).

Jeannette 84, California 45 – Marcus McGowan drained four 3-pointers en route to a 28-point night while Noah Sunder, Jayce Powell and Xavier Odorisio-Farrow each scored 12 as Jeannette (12-1, 6-1) rolled to a Section 1-2A win. Jacob Ziolecki scored 18 for California (2-12, 0-8).

Jefferson-Morgan 52, Burgettstown 41 – Dayten Marion led all scorers with 18 points and John Woodward finished with 11 as Jefferson-Morgan (10-4, 6-2) used a 14-4 third quarter to erase a six-point halftime deficit to secure a Section3-2A win. Parker Rommes had 12 while Colton County and Sma Elich scored 11 points apiece for Burgettstown (4-11, 1-7).

Knoch 69, Valley 22 – Derek Lang scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures for Knoch (11-4, 6-1) in a Section 1-4A win over Valley (5-9, 0-6). Jackson Bauman added 12, Brody Bauman 11 and Teegan Finucan 10.

Latrobe 66, Gateway 56 – Max Butler scored 25 points and Ian DeCerb and Dom Scarton added 13 points apiece to lead Latrobe (15-1, 7-1) to a Section 1-5A win. Mykel Bruce-McCrommon scored 25 points for Gateway (7-7, 5-3).

Leechburg 57, Propel Braddock Hills 50 – Chase Henry scored 19 points, Brady Rollinger added 16 and Jake Cummings finished with 12 to power Leechburg (3-13, 2-5) to a Section 2-2A win. Jarell Santiago scored 18 and Elijah Bagsby-Thornton added 12 for Propel Braddock Hills (2-14, 0-7).

Mars 74, Blackhawk 51 – Austen Wroblewski led Mars (8-6, 4-2) with 27 points, Will Wilson followed with 19 and Austin Campbell added 12 in a Section 4-5A win. Justin Shanor scored 22 points and Tyler Heckathorn had 13 for Blackhawk (4-10, 1-6).

Mohawk 61, Riverside 34 – Joey Nail led all scorers with 18 points, Vinny Pezzuolo made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, Bobby Fadden had 13 and Drew Wrona contributed 12 for Mohawk (11-3, 5-1) in a Section 1-3A victory. Drake Fox had 14 points and McCartney Plassmeyer added 10 for Riverside (7-10, 2-5).

Montour 76, Lincoln Park 49 – Ama Tening Sow finished with 31 points and reached 1,000 points for his career as Montour (11-1, 6-0) bested Lincoln Park (2-12, 0-7) in Section 4-5A. Colton Straight scored 15 points and Mark Carter added 11 for the Spartans. Mason Rowan put up 15 for the Leopards.

Norwin 63, Connellsville 39 – Mario Csukas scored 22 points and Nathan Kuch added 12 to lead Norwin (8-6, 4-3) to a Section 2-6A win. Rocco Farrell scored 11 points and Christian Thomas had 10 for Connellsville (3-12, 0-8).

Obama Academy 60, Carrick 44 – Naron Johnson scored 20 points and Zion Conner added 15 to power Obama Academy (5-6, 4-1) to a City League win. Kelenn Ward scored 18 and Stephon Malloy and Kejuan Johnson each added 10 for Carrick (6-8, 1-3).

OLSH 56, Neshannock 51 – Tiernan McCullough finished with 17 points, Jake Johnson followed with 16 and Vann Kavals had 15 as OLSH (11-4, 6-1) squeaked past Neshannock (12-2, 7-1) in Section 4-2A. David Kwiat led all scorers with 21, Jake Rynd put up 11 and Tony Perrotta had 10 for the Lancers.

Penn Hills 80, Indiana 65 – Amon Hawthorne produced 27 points and drained seven 3-pointers and Calix Clark added 22 points as Penn Hills (5-7, 5-1) won a Section 2-5A matchup. Todd Bishop had 13 and Cam Glenn added 10 for Penn Hills. Aaron Webb dropped 26 points and Stanford Webb finished with 13 for Indiana (5-9, 2-5).

Perry Traditional Academy 63, Westinghouse 56 – Landen Boykin and Chaz Jackson each scored 15 points to power Perry (1-9, 1-3) past Westinghouse (2-9, 2-3) in City League play. Darian Saunders put up 13 points, Tommy Moses and Souljah Cook scored 11 points apiece for the Bulldogs.

Quaker Valley 81, Sto-Rox 48 – Nic Cohen dropped 17 points, Harrison Kerley added 14 and Dominic Cox-Giles scored 12 as Quaker Valley (9-4) cruised to a nonsection win over Sto-Rox (2-10).

Rochester 60, Western Beaver 47 – Jayvin Hemer scored 14 points, Nate Bills had 12 and Bobby George added 11 to lead Rochester (5-10, 2-6) to a Section 4-2A win. Nathan Schwarz led with 22 points and Jackson Liller had 12 for Western Beaver (2-12, 0-8).

Seneca Valley 37, Fox Chapel 35 – Owen Congdon made a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds left to lift Seneca Valley (10-6, 7-1) to a Section 1-6A win over Fox Chapel (11-4, 6-2) for its ninth straight victory. Jaxon Householder led the Raiders with nine points. Caden Kaiser led the Foxes with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Serra Catholic 61, Nazareth Prep 58 (OT) – Owen Dumbroski put up 21 points and Tyler Sapida scored 10 as Serra Catholic (12-2) secured a narrow nonsection victory. Will Evans scored 15, Mikey Evans followed with 14 and Leon Harrison added 12 for Nazareth Prep (10-4).

Sewickley Academy 69, Eden Christian 26 – Lucas Grimsley dropped 21 points to lead Sewickley Academy (11-2, 7-0) to a Section 2-2A thumping of Eden Christian (3-11, 2-5). James Wilkin scored eight points to lead the Warriors.

Shaler 47, Armstrong 43 – Jordan Epps scored 20 points and Trey Kostorick added 12 to lead Shaler (6-9, 3-4) to a Section 2-5A win. Jaydon Oliver scored 12 points and Jacob Szep had 11 for Armstrong (4-10, 0-7).

Shenango 53, South Side 43 – Gavin Bruce hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and Joey Campoli added 12 points to lead Shenango (7-7, 5-3) to a Section 4-2A win. Andrew Corfield scored 16 points for South Side (9-7, 3-5).

South Fayette 68, Ringgold 50 – Gavin Orosz scored 14 points and Jake LeViseur added 11 as South Fayette (11-4, 6-1) defeated Ringgold (3-10, 0-6) in Section 3-5A. Xavion Thomas put up 18 and Demitri Lowe contributed 16 for the Rams.

Springdale 42, Clairton 38 – Robby Simmen scored 16 points to lead Springdale (10-5, 4-4) to a Section 1-2A win. Taris Wooding scored 10 points for Clairton (5-5, 5-2).

Thomas Jefferson 73, Peters Township 71 – Nick Trklja made the game-winning putback as time expired to lift Thomas Jefferson (6-7, 2-4) past Peters Township (11-4, 5-2) in a tight Section 3-5A contest. Justin Fry scored 21 points, Trklja followed with 19 and Noah Kaszer finished with 17. Dylan Donovan led all scorers with 27 and Lucas Rost had 16 for the Indians.

Trinity 58, Bethel Park 45 – Jacob Dunkle dropped 25 points, Anthony Giorgi added 15 and Jonah Williamson followed with 12 for Trinity (8-5, 3-4) in a Section 3-5A win. Tanner Pfeuffer scored 16 for Bethel Park (5-9, 2-5).

Union 61, Laurel 53 – Lucas Stanley scored 29 points and Landon Eckert added 13 to lead Union (12-4, 6-2) to a Section 4-2A win. Jayden Iorio scored 14 points and Vern Sipe and Mason Ernst had 12 apiece for Laurel (8-8, 2-6).

Uniontown 95, Albert Gallatin 65 – Calvin Winfrey led with 28 points, Notorious Grooms followed with 22 and Isaac Ellsworth added 20 for Uniontown (13-3, 8-0) in a Section 1-5A win. Ethan Kenndy scored 22 points and Jason Jackson had 16 for Albert Gallatin (7-8, 2-6).

West Allegheny 65, Ambridge 60 – Anthony Lanni scored 19 points, Jonah Buglak had 13 and Josiah Johnson added 10 to lead West Allegheny (7-9) to a nonsection win. Jared Astorino scored 13 points and Owen Buchanan had 11 for Ambridge (2-11).

West Greene 74, Carmichaels 45 – Lane Allison led with 21 points, Patrick Durbin followed with 15, Parker Burns added 13 and Darren Knight had 10 for West Greene (8-6, 6-2) in a Section 3-2A win. Scott Maskel scored 12 points for Carmichaels (3-10, 2-6).

Winchester Thurston 57, Brentwood 46 – Matt Southers scored 17 points and Anthony Pipkin followed with 13 to boost Winchester Thurston (9-4, 4-2) to a Section 2-2A win. Forrest Betz led all scorers with 18 for Brentwood (6-8, 3-3).

Woodland Hills 44, Pine-Richland 43 (OT) – Scoop Smith scored 17 points, including the game-winning basket with three seconds left, to lead Woodland Hills (6-8, 2-6) to an overtime win in Section 1-6A. Grant Spacciapolli scored 16 points and Zack Kenny added 10 for Pine-Richland (5-8, 3-5).

Albert Gallatin 70, Uniontown 28 – Mya Glisan scored 31 points to hit the 1,000-point mark for her career in a Section 4-5A win for Albert Gallatin (6-7, 1-6). Grayce Panos added 22 points for the Colonials. Charley Murtha scored nine points for Uniontown (5-10, 1-6).

Allderdice 74, Brashear 28 – Seena Teshome scored 20 points to Allderdice (11-5, 5-0) to a City League win over Brashear (4-4, 2-3). Peyton Lynch added 15 points, Bailey White 14 and Rhyan Sledge 11 for the Dragons.

Avella 69, Bentworth 39 – Ava Frank led Avella (7-8) with 30 points and Syd Strope followed with 24 in a nonsection win. Kayla O’Dell scored 16 points for Bentworth (6-8).

Bethel Park 44, Trinity 32 – Sadie Orie scored 16 points and Ella Sabatos added 10 to lead Bethel Park (7-8, 4-3) to a Section 44-5A win. Sutton Williamson scored 14 points for Trinity (8-5, 3-4).

Carlynton 58, Jefferson-Morgan 35 – Lucy Vetter scored 14 points and Jocalyn Griffin added 11 to lead Carlynton (7-7) to a nonsection win. Leighana Gooden scored 11 points and Ava Wood had 10 for Jefferson-Morgan (1—13).

Eden Christian 50, Sewickley Academy 40 – Hannah Wallace scored 20 points and Emmie Smith added 16 to power Eden Christian (4-9, 3-5) to a Section 1-A win. Grace Jardini scored 17 for Sewickley Academy (4-8, 3-5).

Elizabeth Forward 66, Southmoreland 17 – Michelle Jellison scored 23 points to lead Elizabeth Forward (10-3, 7-0) to a Section 3-4A victory. Kaelynn Settles had 12 and McKenna Bittner added 11 for the Warriors. Olivia Aumer led Southmoreland (3-12, 1-7) with six points.

Franklin Regional 60, Plum 51 – Toryn Fulton hit for 23 points, Addison Musto added 18 and Madison DeRiggi chipped in 11 for Franklin Regional (10-5, 7-0) in a Section 1-5A win. Plum (4-9, 3-4) was led by 19 points from Serena Carnahan, 15 from Tamia West and 10 from Riley Stephans.

Freeport 60, Derry 33 – Maggie Conger scored 12 points and Nia DiSanti added 11 for Freeport (4-11, 3-5) in a Section 1-4A win. Jane Huss scored 16 points for Derry (3-10, 1-7).

Hopewell 42, Lincoln Park 14 – Caylee Sundy scored 15 points to lead Hopewell (4-10, 2-4) to a Section 2-4A win. Patty Weselowski scored 12 points for Lincoln Park (3-9, 1-9).

Latrobe 68, West Mifflin 18 – Maggie Maiers scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for Latrobe (9-6, 5-2) in a Section 2-5A win. Carley Berk added 11 and Emmy Bridge and Julianna Bulebosh each had 10. Savaughn Wimbs led West Mifflin (2-11, 0-7) with 10 points.

Laurel Highlands 48, South Park 31 – Miya Harris produced 15 points while Aierra Jenkins and Taylor Schwertfeger each scored 11 as Laurel Highlands (11-4, 6-2) beat South Park (8-4, 5-2) in Section 3-4A. Andrea Kuczma scored 10 points for the Eagles.

McGuffey 58, Carmichaels 19 – Lexi Ewig scored 15 points, Taylor Schumacher had 12 and Mykenna Meighen added 11 to lead McGuffey (10-5) to a nonsection win over Carmichaels (1-14).

Mt. Pleasant 40, Yough 23 – Ryleigh Drzal led with 15 points and Morgan Gesinski added 12 to lead Mt. Pleasant (3-11, 3-5) past Yough (8-6, 3-4) to a Section 3-4A win. Evelyn Gates scored 11 for the Cougars.

Norwin 53, North Hills 38 – Kendall Berger scored 14 points and Bella Furno added 13 to lead Norwin (8-5) to a nonsection win over North Hills (5-10, 1-5).

Penn-Trafford 57, Greensburg Salem 34 – Led by 14 points from Raya Johnson, 13 from Lauren Marton and 10 from Kamryn Pieper, Penn-Trafford (15-0, 7-0) picked up a Section 2-5A win. Mya Heasley led Greensburg Salem (8-7, 2-5) with 19 points.

Shaler 48, Armstrong 26 – Reese Smetanka put up 22 points and Jorja Bernesser added 10 as Shaler (12-2, 5-1) defeated Armstrong (2-12, 1-6) in Section 1-5A. Marlo Mellish had 10 for the River Hawks.

Union 58, Aquinas Academy 24 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 19 points, Addie Nogay had 16 and Olivia Benedict added 11 to lead Union (13-0, 7-0) to a Section 1-A win. Tess Duer and Elliot Keverline scored seven points apiece for Aquinas Academy (8-5, 5-2).

West Greene 84, Hundred (WV) 26 – Kendra Tharp led with 19 points, Jilissa Yeater followed with 17 and Samantha Zimmerman added 10 for West Greene (9-3) in a nonsection win. Johni Yeager scored 11 points for Hundred (WV).
