High school roundup for May 8: Peters Township softball clinches playoff berth

Lindsey Thomas and Chloe Paugh each went 3 for 3 and Kate Hondru homered to lift Peters Township to a playoff berth after a 10-7 Section 1-6A victory over Canon-McMillan.

The Indians (9-8, 7-5) scored four runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to seal the win.

Katelyn Greaves was 3 for 3 for the Big Macs (9-6, 8-4).

Gateway 10, Woodland Hills 0 (6 inn.) — Maura Ryan threw a one-hitter with three strikeouts to help Gateway (8-6, 8-6) win in Section 1-5A.

Penn-Trafford 8, Greensburg Salem 0 — Morgan Hilty pitched a four-hitter and struck out four to pace Class 5A No. 2 Penn-Trafford in a Section 1 victory.

Morgan Nedley homered and drove in four runs for the Warriors. Emma Armstrong also homered. Mattie White doubled for Greensburg Salem (8-9, 7-7), which was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Albert Gallatin 10, Laurel Highlands 2 — Maddy Hershberger homered, knocked in four runs and also picked up the win as Albert Gallatin rolled past Section 2-5A rival Laurel Highlands (3-11, 1-11). Emma Bliss homered and pitcher Lauren Sperry picked up the loss for Laurel Highlands (3-11, 1-11).

Hampton 10, Mars 0 (6 inn.) — Annelise Probeck threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts as Hampton (8-7, 7-5) blanked No. 4 Mars (10-7, 8-4) in Section 3-5A.

Elizabeth Forward 8, West Mifflin 1 — Taylor Ludwick had a double, triple and four RBIs as No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (15-3, 9-3) won in Section 2-4A.

Hopewell 5, Central Valley 2 — Riley Lewis and Kacey Weller each had two RBIs as Hopewell (4-9, 3-9) won in Section 3-4A.

Deer Lakes 13, Valley 2 (5 inn.) — Katrina Taliani went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to place Deer Lakes (5-6, 4-6) in a Section 1-3A win. Hannah Mass drove in three runs, Maura Cerra had two hits and Katelynn Blair doubled. Domenica Wolfe tripled and scored a run for Valley (2-9, 2-8).

Monessen 25, California 0 (3 inn.) — Dana Vatakis threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and also went 5 for 5 with three doubles, a triple and RBI as No. 1 Monessen (12-2, 11-1) won in Section 2-A.

Mattie Telegraphis was 4 for 4 with five RBIs, and Carly Rock was 4 for 4 with three RBIs.

West Greene 9, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Jade Renner threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and also had three hits and two RBIs as No. 2 West Greene (15-4, 11-1) won in Section 2-A. Madison Renner and Lexie Mooney homered.

Jeannette 15, Geibel 5 — Savannah Berry doubled twice, tripled and singled for the Jayhawks (4-8, 4-8) in a Section 3-A win over Geibel (2-9, 2-8). Faith Johnston had three hits, including two doubles for Jeannette, and Taylor-Lynn Finken and Grace Johnston had a double apiece.

Riverview 12, Ellis School 2 (6 inn.) — Carys Kenny-Howell had three hits, drove in four runs and struck out 10 in six innings for Riverview (11-3, 9-3) in a Section 3-A victory over Ellis School (0-12, 0-12). Alyssa Cappa had a solo homer for the Raiders, and Alivia Acierno singled three times and had a pair of RBIs.

Derry 3, Penn Manor 2 — The Trojans rallied with two runs in the fifth inning to pick up a nonsection win over Hertitage Conference foe Penns Manor (9-7). Kiley Latshaw picked up the win for Derry (4-9).

Fox Chapel 4, North Hills 1 — Neena Pietropaolo doubled and drove in three runs to help Fox Chapel (6-8) score a nonsection victory over North Hills (5-8). Tawyna Holben doubled for the Foxes, and Emma Hughes pitched five innings, allowing two hits and striking out two to earn the win.

Hempfield 7, North Allegheny 2 — Emma Hoffner had two RBIs, and Maddie Uschock threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts to lead Class 6A No. 2 Hempfield (15-3) to a nonsection win over No. 4 North Allegheny (13-7).

Ligonier Valley 14, Hollidaysburg 2 — Jane Garver homered and drove in four runs and Lexie Petrof had five hits, including a pair of doubles, for Ligonier Valley (14-3) in a nonsection win. Abby Turcheck doubled and drove in three runs for the Rams and Abi Cmar singled three times.

Seneca Valley 5, Knoch 4 — Morgan Aloi was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in helping Seneca Valley (11-5) to a nonsection win.

South Park 11, Seton LaSalle 1 (5 inn.) — Jess Dean threw a one-hitter with four strikeouts, and Kaitlyn Pavlick was 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs as Class 3A No. 1 South Park (13-1) won a nonsection game.

Baseball

Franklin Regional 5, Albert Gallatin 1 — Mike Klingensmith had two hits, including a double and two RBIs to help Franklin Regional (14-3, 12-2) earn a Section 3-5A win over Albert Gallatin (4-13, 3-10). Palmer Jackson pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits to earn the win.

Deer Lakes 3, Highlands 1 — With a playoff berth secure, Jake McCaskey and Deer Lakes closed their section schedule in strong fashion Tuesday.

McCaskey struck out 12 in five innings, pitching the Lancers to a victory over Section 1-4A rival Highlands.

Tyler Smith doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning, and Alex Matter pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the save for the Lancers (11-7, 8-6).

Nick Cichello pitched a three-hitter for Highlands (3-13, 3-11) but took the loss. Zac Kuniak doubled for the Golden Rams, and Matthew Cekada had two hits.

Derry 4, Freeport 3 — Conner Watt hit a walk-off two-run single that capped off a four-run seventh for Derry (5-13, 3-11) in a Section 1 win over Class 4A No. 3 Freeport (11-3, 11-3). Donte Klapchar had a two-run single in earlier in the seventh. Gavin Skradski had two hits for Freeport and Griffin Cohen doubled.

Ellwood City 3, Mohawk 0 — Sammy DiCaprio and Kyle Smith each went 2 for 3 with an RBI as Ellwood City (4-10, 4-8) won in Section 2-3A.

Riverview 7, Northgate 0 — Mark McClelland pitched a two-hitter and struck out six for Riverview (5-9, 4-9) in a Section 3-2A win over Northgate (1-11, 1-11). Jordan Zatawski and Noah Black had two hits apiece for the Raiders.

Fox Chapel 8, Shady Side Academy 3 — Alex Miles singled up the middle to score Noah Marks and spark a six-run fifth inning as playoff-bound Fox Chapel picked up the nonconference win over Shady Side Academy. Reed Bursic got the win for Fox Chapel (8-9) giving up seven hits and striking out seven. Matt Wellstead took the loss for Shady Side Academy (6-8). James Patterson doubled and drove in a run for the Foxes.

Latrobe 2, Pine-Richland 1 (8 inn.) — Preston Boerio came home on a wild pitch to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth and give Latrobe (10-8) a nonsection victory over Class 6A No. 4 Pine-Richland (11-6).

Plum 9, North Allegheny 7 — Class 6A No. 5 Plum scored six times in the bottom of the sixth, then held off a seventh-inning charge by North Allegheny to earn a nonsection win. Dom Carlisano tripled and drove in three runs for the Mustangs (14-4), and Jackson Rogers doubled and had a pair of RBIs. Brett Heckert had three hits and three RBIs for North Allegheny, which scored four times in the seventh.

North Hills 2, Shaler 0 — Beau Braunlich threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Class 5A No. 5 North Hills (15-3) to a nonsection win. Garret Barto was 3 for 3 for the Indians.

Springdale 15, Holy Family Academy 0 (3 inn.) — Isaac Kern gave up one hit and struck out eight to lift Springdale past Holy Family Academy in a nonconference matchup. Kern doubled, tripled and knocked in three runs, and Jake Garmong and Zach Liberatti doubled and added two RBIs a piece.
