High school roundup for Oct. 15, 2018: Peters Township, USC girls share Section 2-4A title

Regan LaVigna scored twice, and Abby Neupaver and Sarah Heisinger added goals as No. 3-ranked Peters Township claimed a share of the Section 2-4A title with a 4-2 victory over rival Canon-McMillan.

Sarah Powell scored twice for the Big Macs (10-7-1, 6-7-1).

Peters Township (13-3, 11-3) has won three straight since a 3-1 loss to Mt. Lebanon on Oct. 6.

Upper St. Clair 4, Mt. Lebanon 2 — The Panthers (12-3, 11-3) also claimed a share of the Section 2-4A title with a victory over Mt. Lebanon (9-5-3, 8-4-2).

Landy Mertz scored twice for the Panthers.

Mars 1, Hampton 0 — In Section 1-3A, Taylor Hamlett scored to give No. 1 Mars (15-0, 14-0) an undefeated season in section play.

Thomas Jefferson 6, West Mifflin 0 — Dalaney Ranallo and Alaina Mulvihill each had two goals and an assist as Thomas Jefferson (7-10, 6-6) won in Section 3-3A. Madison Sippey posted the shutout.

West Allegheny 1, Montour 0 — Alyssa Goldstrohm scored the lone goal as West Allegheny (11-5, 9-3) defeated No. 3 Montour (10-6, 8-4) in Section 4-3A.

Chartiers Valley 1, South Fayette 0 — Alexandra Ferrella scored midway through the second half as Chartiers Valley (6-9-1, 3-8-1) won in Section 4-3A.

South Park 5, South Allegheny 1 — Haleigh Finale had four goals as No. 1 South Park (15-2, 12-1) won in Section 3-2A.

Shady Side Academy 8, Riverview 0 — Krystyna Rytel scored three goals and had an assists, and Sophia McMahon added two goals as No. 2 Shady Side Academy (9-3, 8-2) won in Section 1-A.

Bentworth 6, Beth-Center 0 — In Section 2-A, Jocelyn Timlin had three goals, and Cande Kossell posted her ninth shutout to lead No. 4 Bentworth (14-1, 12-0) to victory.

Yough 6, Southmoreland 0 — Natalie Vilcheck and Justine Appolonia each scored three times to vault Yough to a Section 3-2A victory over Southmoreland (2-13, 1-13).

The playoff-bound Cougars (11-5, 9-5) have won five straight games.

Hempfield 4, Latrobe 1 — Jess Persin had two goals to lead Hempfield (6-8, 6-6) to a Section 3-4A win over Latrobe (3-13, 2-10).

Gateway 3, Franklin Regional 1 — Victoria Rothrauff scored for the Panthers (7-8-2, 4-7-2), but it wasn’t enough to defeat Gateway (7-8-2, 5-7-2) in a Section 1-3A game.

Belle Vernon 2, Laurel Highlands 0 — Isabella Laurita scored two goals as Belle Vernon (13-3, 12-0) won a Section 2-3A game.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Greensburg Salem 0 — Bri Skalican and Natalie Beinlich each had two goals to guide Elizabeth Forward (8-7, 8-4) past Greensburg Salem (6-10-1, 6-5-1) in a Section 2-3A game.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Derry 1 — Mackenzie Leeder, Ashton Clark and Ashley Mullen scored as Mt. Pleasant (10-6, 7-6) defeated Derry (1-14, 1-12) in Section 3-2A.

Shayree Ansell made seven saves for the Vikings, who will wrap up the regular season at Brownsville on Tuesday.

Greensburg Central Catholic 13, Jeannette 0 — Sarah Orndoff scored four times, and Sam Felder, Sam Nemeth, Jesse Nemeth, Leah Jacobson, Krista McWilliams, Ashley McWilliams, Bethany Winnor, Brenna Springer and Tatum Gretz also scored as No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2, 8-1) beat Jeannette (1-11, 0-9) in Section 1-A.

Apollo-Ridge 1, Highlands 0 — Adeline Baustert delivered in crunch time, and the Apollo-Ridge girls soccer team stayed alive in its quest for a Class AA playoff spot.

Baustert connected on a free kick from 20 yards out with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left.

Apollo-Ridge (5-6-1, 4-6-1) moved to within one point of Highlands (5-7-2, 4-5-2) for the fourth and final playoff spot from Section 2.

Deer Lakes 2, Freeport 1 — Lily Litrun and Abigail Boulos scored a goal apiece to help Class AA No. 3 Deer Lakes (15-1-1, 11-0-1) complete an unbeaten Section 2 season with a win over Freeport (9-6-2, 7-4-1). Ashley McAdams and Madeline Boulos had an assist each for the Lancers. Sidney Shemanski scored for Freeport.

Burrell 10, Valley 1 — Cara Fiore scored three goals and had one assist as Class AA No. 5 Burrell defeated Valley (3-11, 1-10) in Section 2 play. Maddie Schaub added two goals and Jordyn Kowalkowski added one goal and one assist. Delaney O’Brien recorded eight saves in the win for Burrell (11-2-2, 8-2-1).

Kiski Area 11, Armstrong 0 — Kaylee Elwood had a hat trick to help Kiski Area (12-4, 10-3) cruise to a Section 1-AAA win over Armstrong (2-14, 0-14). Reagan Frederick had two goals for the Cavaliers.

Knoch 1, Indiana 1 (2 OT) — Lindsie Galbreath scored for Knoch (3-13-2, 2-10-2), which finished the season with a draw at Indiana (6-6-6, 4-6-4). Maddi Boyer had an assist for the Knights, and Jewel Robertson made four saves in goal.

Connellsville 4, Laurel Highlands 0 — Gaven Wood had three goals to lift Connellsville (13-4) to a nonsection win.

Kiski Area 2, Hempfield 1 — Evan Long and Greg Paes scored for Kiski Area (11-6-1) in a nonsection victory. David Mrva scored for Hempfield (3-12).

Mt. Pleasant 3, Southmoreland 0 — Mt. Pleasant improved to 11-4 overall with a nonsection victory over Southmoreland (8-9).

St. Joseph 7, Valley 0 — Daniel Fábregas scored four goals and had one assist in St. Joseph’s nonsection win over Valley (0-15). Eli Swierczewski scored two goals and Dominic Ferrante added one goal and two assists for St. Joseph (7-10).

Springdale 8, Neshannock 0 — Matt Taliani and Jake Garmong scored two goals apiece for Class A No. 5 Springdale (12-2-1) in a nonsection win at Neshannock (3-11-1). Ephraim Duku, Alex Barch, Duncan Catagarone and Isaac Charlton scored one goal apiece. Dynamos goalie Mike Zolnierczyk stopped three shots to record his 11th shutout of the season.

Hockey

Baldwin 6, Plum 4 — Anthony Adamski scored two goals for the Mustangs (0-2-0-1) in a Class AA South/East loss to Baldwin (1-2). Logan Schlegel and Daniel Baranowski also had goals for Plum. Justin Pollard scored twice for Baldwin.

Franklin Regional 8, Hampton 7 — Joseph Scherpereel had three goals, Trent Lunden had three goals and an assist, and Oldrich Virag had six assists as Franklin Regional (1-1) won a PIHL Class AA game.

Jack Hughes had two goals and an assist for the Warriors.

Hempfield 7, Penn-Trafford 4 — Matthew Traczynski scored three times, and Christian Conieczka had a goal and two assists to lift Hempfield (3-0) past Penn-Trafford (1-2) in a PIHL Class AA game.
