High school roundup for Oct. 16, 2018: Greensburg Salem boys clinch playoff berth

With a WPIAL playoff berth on the line, Ethan Turnbull delivered in a big way for the Greensburg Salem boys soccer team Tuesday.

He scored four goals to lift the Golden Lions to a 5-2 victory over Laurel Highlands, clinching a playoff berth in Section 3-3A.

Greensburg Salem (8-8, 7-5) finished in fourth place behind Ringgold (10-2), Laurel Highlands (8-3-1) and Belle Vernon (8-3-1).

Norwin 12, Penn Hills 1 — Andy Yaned and Kyle Krotec combined to make three saves as Norwin (15-2-1, 13-0-1) won a Section 3-4A game. Carter Breen scored his 33rd goal of the season and the 65th of his career.

Belle Vernon 4, Trinity 3 — Markello Apodiakos had three goals to guide Belle Vernon (12-5-1, 8-3-1) to a Section 3-3A victory.

Serra Catholic 11, Jeannette 1 — Jimmy Moon and Joey Folino scored twice each as Serra Catholic (10-6, 7-5) defeated Jeannette (1-11, 1-11) in Section 2-A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 5, Freeport 4 — Luke Mort had three goals, and Nate Ward added two as Class A No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (14-1) won a nonsection game.

Seton LaSalle 9, California 0 — Kellen Krebs had a hat trick to lift No. 4 Seton LaSalle (14-3, 11-1) to a Section 4-A victory.

Eden Christian 1, Trinity Christian 0 — Alex Cook scored, and Will Lucas notched the shutout as Eden Christian (7-7-1) won a nonsection game.

Mars 3, Ambridge 0 — Austin Rocke scored twice, and Shane Lisman added a goal as Class 3A No. 3 Mars (16-1-1) won a nonsection game.

North Catholic 3, Pine-Richland 2 — Ryan Augustine had two goals, and Joe Kearney added a goal as Class 2A No. 3 North Catholic (12-3) won a nonsection game.

Quaker Valley 1, Sewickley Academy 0 — Dominic Reiter scored the lone goal as Class 2A No. 1 Quaker Valley (15-3) won a nonsection game over Class A No. 3 Sewickley Academy (12-4).

Thomas Jefferson 2, Elizabeth Forward 1 — AJ Meshanko had a goal and assist, and Preston Lutz scored the game-winning goal as Thomas Jefferson (13-4-1) won a nonsection game.

Deer Lakes 2, Hampton 0 — Ronan Ranter and AJ Dorman both scored second-half goals to lead Class AA No. 2 ranked Deer Lakes past nonsection rival Hampton (10-7, 9-5). The win marks the Lancers’ 12th win in a row while Hampton backed into the postseason on a four-game losing streak. Goalkeeper Jesse Greyshock tallied seven saves for Deer Lakes ( 15-0-1, 11-0-1).

Highlands 1, Indiana 0 — Gabe Norris’ goal was the only offense Highlands needed to earn a Section 1-AAA win over Indiana (7-10, 7-7). Gabe Anthony recorded 11 saves for Highlands (7-10, 6-8).

Girls soccer

Peters Township 7, Allderdice 0 — Hannah Stuck had a goal and four assists and Regan LaVigna scored one goal and had two assists as Class 4A No. 2 Peters Township (14-3) won a nonsection game.

Seton LaSalle 4, Eden Christian Academy 1 — Vanessa Peretin and Mikaela Small each had two goals as No. 5 Seton LaSalle (9-4-2, 9-1-2) won in Section 4-A.

South Park 8, Derry 0 — Haleigh Finale scored four goals to guide No. 1 South Park (16-2, 13-1) to a Section 3-2A win over Derry (1-15, 1-13). Olexei Nuttall stopped two penalty kicks for Derry.

Greensburg Central Catholic 9, Serra Catholic 1 — Sam Nemeth and Tatum Gretz each had three goals as No. 2-ranked Greensburg Central Catholic (9-2, 9-1) capped off Section 1-A play with a convincing victory.

Apollo-Ridge 4, Valley 1 — With a playoff berth in sight, Apollo-Ridge took care of business.

Mayce Anthony scored a hat trick, leading Apollo-Ridge to a 4-1 victory over Valley in a Section 2-AA game Tuesday night. The win, coupled with Burrell’s 4-1 victory over Highlands, secured fourth place in the section and a corresponding playoff spot for Apollo-Ridge.

Goalkeeper Madison Galinac tallied eight saves, Adeline Baustert finished with three assists and Emily Bonelli added a goal for Apollo-Ridge (6-6-1, 5-6-1), which qualified for its third straight postseason and first in Class AA.

Burrell 4, Highlands 1 — Skylar Dale scored the game-winner and Jordyn Kowalkowski added a pair of goals as Class AA No. 5 Burrell scored four second-half goals to down Section 2-AA rival Highlands. Annie Weimer tacked on a late insurance goal for Burrell (12-2-2, 9-2-1). MeKenzie Heinle scored for Highlands (5-8-2, 4-6-2).

Kiski Area 5, Franklin Regional 1 — Reagan Frederick recorded a hat trick and added one assist in Kiski Area’s Section 1-AAA win over Franklin Regional (7-9-2, 4-8-2). Kaylee Elwood had one goal and one assist, Courtney Moyer scored one goal and Kira Brown made five saves in the win for Kiski Area (13-4, 11-3).

Freeport 8, Armstrong 0 — Sidney Shemanski scored two goals as Freeport defeated Armstrong (2-15) in nonsection play. Ariana Clark, Abby Bastaja, Emma Check, Autumn Kriebel, Kaylin Greiser and Hannah Slaughenhoupt all added one goal. Maddie Wagner made two saves for Freeport (10-6-2).

Girls tennis

Greensburg Salem 3, Derry 2 — Kasey Storkel and Tiffany Bruzda won singles matches, and Asher Joy and Sydney Tressler won a three-set doubles match to give Greensburg Salem a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal victory.

The Golden Lions will play top-seeded Sewickley Academy in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Chapel. Amber Sterrett won at second singles for Derry, and the Trojans’ tandem of Kenzie Burd and Tara Perry also won.

Beaver 5, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 — Devyn Campbell, Anna Blum and Grace Barrett won singles matches as Beaver won a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal match. Beaver will play Knoch in the semifinals at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Seneca Valley.

Shady Side Academy 3, Latrobe 2 — In the Class AAA quarterfinals, Aya Youssef won in singles, and Shady Side Academy swept doubles matches to advance to the semifinals.

Jenna Bell and Carolina Walters won singles matches for Latrobe.

Girls volleyball

Derry 3, Burrell 0 — Kamryn Kelly had nine kills, Destiny Roberts had eight and Rylee Ellis added seven as Derry won a Section 5-AA match, 25-23, 25-7, 25-23.

Ligonier Valley 3, Blairsville 0 — Abi Cmar had six kills and two aces to lead Ligonier Valley (7-8, 7-7) to a Heritage Conference win. Abby Neidbalson had three aces and 15 assists.

Freeport 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Lauren Lampus tallied 10 kills and four service points as Class AA No. 1 Freeport blanked Section 5 rival Apollo-Ridge (2-11, 2-9). Haley Graham finished with nine kills, two blocks and four service points and Ally DeJidas tallied seven kills, eight service points and two aces for the Yellowjackets.

Knoch 3, Lincoln Park 0 — Kennedy Christy recorded 18 kills as Class AAA No. 1 Knoch cruised to a Section 4 win over Lincoln Park. Hannah Rowe added nine kills and Ally Albert recorded 18 service points for Knoch (17-0, 13-0).

Greensburg Central Catholic 3, Leechburg 1 — Maddie Ancosky recorded eight kills, 12 digs and three aces, but Leechburg fell to No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 4-A play despite taking the first set 26-24. Brenna Callahan recorded eight kills, 10 digs and one ace and Sami Bigenho added 20 assists and four digs for Leechburg (11-4, 9-4).
