High school roundup for Sept. 11, 2024: Peters Township, Upper St. Clair battle to draw

When the top two teams in the Section 2-4A girls soccer standings met Wednesday night, nothing was settled.

Julia Spergel and Cam Klein scored for Peters Township (5-0-1, 2-0-1) and Brooke Bodamer and Abby Mascaro scored for Upper St. Clair (4-0-2, 1-0-2) as the South Hills rivals played to a 2-2 tie.

The teams will meet again Oct. 2 at Upper St. Clair.

Baldwin 2, Connellsville 0 – Kelsey Meyer had a goal and an assist while Mary Vargo netted a goal to lead Baldwin (5-3, 2-1) to a Section 2-4A win over Connellsville (4-5, 0-3).

Belle Vernon 2, Keystone Oaks 0 – Ava Scalise and Jordyn McDowell each scored a goal while Kelsey Roskovitch and Chessa Mertz had an assist apiece to lead Belle Vernon (4-4, 3-2) to a Section 1-2A win against Keystone Oaks (5-4, 3-1). Skylar Salay made eight saves for a clean sheet for the Leopards.

Bentworth 3, Brownsville 1 – Megan Leturakis, Bella Moyer and Brielle Dillon scored for Bentworth (5-0, 2-0) in a Section 2-A defeat of Brownsville (0-5-1, 0-2-1). Elizabeth McCune scored for the Falcons. Madelyn Johns had a pair of assists for the Bearcats.

Burrell 2, Knoch 0 – Makiah Buchak scored both goals for Burrell (4-1-1, 2-1) in a Section 2-2A shutout win against Knoch (0-6-1, 0-3). Miley Kariotis and Katie Koehler each had an assist for the Bucs.

Butler 7, North Hills 0 – Cecelia Wolford had a hat trick and Kat McGuire, Sydney Patterson, Ava Soley and Malina McElroy added a goal apiece to lead Butler (3-4, 1-2) to a Section 3-4A win over North Hills (2-5, 0-3).

Carlynton 2, Aquinas Academy 1 – Riley Mauro and Bella D’Antonio scored and Anita O’Leary stopped a penalty kick to lead Carlynton (6-1, 3-1) to a Section 3-A win over Aquinas Academy (2-3, 2-3).

Eden Christian 5, Mohawk 1 – Alex Nacey scored a pair of goals to lead Eden Christian (3-3-1, 3-0-1) past Mohawk (3-2, 1-2) in Section 1-A.

Fox Chapel 3, Hampton 0 – Emily McGee scored her 11th goal of the year to help Fox Chapel (6-0, 5-0) to a Section 1-3A win over Hampton (5-2, 2-2).

Franklin Regional 4, Gateway 0 – Reilly Weaver had a pair of goals and Eden Williams and Abby Paterline also scored as Franklin Regional (4-4) shut out Gateway (1-4) in nonsection play. Addison Ayres and Alaina McGrath combined on the shutout for the Panthers.

Hempfield 1, Armstrong 0 (OT) – Jiana Patterson scored the winning goal on a feed from Sofia Lopez-Diaz and Hempfield (2-4, 1-2) topped Armstrong (1-5, 1-2) in Section 1-4A.

Moon 4, Trinity 0 – Lily Snyder and Julia Shaver scored two goals apiece to lead Moon (5-1, 5-0) past Trinity (0-4, 0-4) in a Section 2-3A win.

Mt. Pleasant 15, East Allegheny 1 – Morgan Gesinski scored four goals, Rylin Bugosh recorded a hat trick and Gwen Podolinsky buried a pair of goals to lead Mt. Pleasant (6-0, 3-0) to a Section 4-2A victory over East Allegheny (1-3, 0-3).

North Allegheny 3, Allderdice 0 – Isabella Costa, Mia Bosley and Kieran Shannon scored and Margaret Nestor preserved the shutout as North Allegheny (4-2, 2-1) beat Allderdice (2-4, 1-2) in Section 3-4A.

North Catholic 4, Freeport 0 – Kathleen Virostek, Lauren Mealie and Simone Sharpless each had a goal and an assist to lead North Catholic (8-0, 3-0) past Freeport (4-1, 2-1) in Section 2-2A. Mikaela Canzian also scored and Riley Marsico and Marina Comino combined on the shutout.

Oakland Catholic 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Corinna Martella scored a hat trick to help Oakland Catholic (2-4, 1-2) past Albert Gallatin (1-4, 1-2) in Section 3-3A.

Penn Hills 1, Obama Academy 0 – Sydney Skoda scored, with an assist from Carissa Korotko, to lead Penn Hills (1-3-1, 1-3) past Obama Academy (1-5, 0-4).

Penn-Trafford 6, Woodland Hills 0 – Alexis Brown and Lauryn Francis had two goals apiece, Riley McIntosh and Addie Swartz also scored, and Rease Solomon, Alannah Hall and Natalie Broadwater combined on the shutout for Penn-Trafford (5-2, 3-0) in a Section 1-4A victory over Woodland Hills (0-5-1, 0-3).

Plum 2, Kiski Area 0 – Ali Joyce and Emily Grubich scored and Makenna Anderson and Malayna Smith combined on the shutout to lift Plum (5-0, 4-0) past Kiski Area (3-4, 3-2) in Section 4-3A. Mia Nardo and Gianna Revetta collected assists for the Mustangs.

Quaker Valley 2, Central Valley 0 – Annabel Miko and Ari Bosh each scored a goal to propel Quaker Valley (5-1-1, 3-0) over Central Valley (3-4, 1-3) in Section 3-2A. Clara Herman kept the clean sheet for the Quakers.

Seneca Valley 1, Pine-Richland 0 – Cassie Leonard scored for Seneca Valley (5-2, 3-0) in a Section 3-4A win over Pine-Richland (4-2, 2-1).

Shady Side Academy 10, Valley 0 – Ella Van Norman had four goals and an assist to spark Shady Side Academy (3-3, 2-1) to a Section 2-2A win over Valley (1-4, 0-3).

South Park 7, Ringgold 0 – Arianna Beck and Reese Recker scored two goals apiece for South Park (4-3, 4-0) in a Section 1-2A win over Ringgold (2-4, 1-4).

Southmoreland 3, Yough 2 (OT) – Aubrey Seder scored her second goal of the game with two seconds left in the second overtime for Southmoreland (5-2, 3-0) in a Section 4-2A win over Yough (4-3, 1-2). Megan Mehall also scored for the Scotties.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 1 – Aislin Majoris had a hat trick and Denika Bergman, Aubrey Little, Olivia Della Lucia and Savannah Baker also scored to lead Thomas Jefferson (4-1, 3-0) past Uniontown (1-4, 0-3) in Section 3-3A.

Waynesburg 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Jaden Tretinik and Kolbi Rastoka scored a goal apiece for Waynesburg (5-1, 2-1) in a Section 2-A win over Chartiers-Houston (4-2, 2-1).

West Allegheny 2, Montour 0 – Chloe Hart and Mia Bardelli scored for West Allegheny (4-2-1, 3-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Montour (4-2-1, 2-1-1).

Boys soccer

Jeannette 9, St. Joseph 3 – Jorel Taylor had a hat trick, Zion Harper added two goals and McAlister Steele had a goal and five assists to lead Jeannette (2-4, 1-2) past St. Joseph (1-6, 0-3) in a Section 4-A win.

Girls tennis

Section 1-3A – Two-time defending section champion Mia Williams of Penn-Trafford advanced to the section finals without dropping a game. Williams defeated Norwin freshman Bayleigh Vilage, the fourth seed, in the semifinals. Franklin Regional’s Michelle Yan, the second seed, also reached the finals, defeating Latrobe’s Carlin Bukovac, the third seed, in straight sets in the semis.

The championship and consolation finals are set for 10:30 a.m. at Franklin Regional. In Class 3A, the top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament Sept. 18-19.

Section 2-3A – Pine-Richland freshman Cassandra Lapina, the top seed, will face second-seeded Elinor Kim of North Hills in the section final. Lapina defeated fifth-seed Kiera Wise of Moon and Kim stopped third-seeded Mia Kaufman of North Allegheny in straight sets in the semifinals.

Section 3-3A – Shady Side Academy sophomore Meriwether McCargo, the defending WPIAL champion, will meet teammate Brooke Henderson in the section finals. The Bulldogs duo beat a pair of Fox Chapel players in straight sets in the semifinals, with McCargo defeating Anna Kintner and Henderson knocking off No. 2 seed Sienna Siegel.

Section 1-2A – Two-time defending section champ Sasha Hoffman of Greensburg Central Catholic advanced to Thursday’s finals without dropping a game. Hoffman defeated Mt. Pleasant’s Ryleigh Drzal in the semifinals. Drzal, the 12th seed, knocked off No. 5 Lexi Levendosky of Southmoreland and No. 4 Sophia Harclerode of Valley in her first two matches. Hoffman’s finals opponent will be Derry’s Paige King, the third seed who defeated No. 2 Bella Fullman of Mt. Pleasant in the semifinals. In Class 2A, the top three finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament Sept. 18-19.

Section 2-2A – Defending WPIAL champion Gabriella Dusi of Belle Vernon advanced to Thursday’s semifinals without dropping a game in two matches. She’ll be joined by fifth seed Luciana Easly of Oakland Catholic, third seed Grace Kempton of South Park and second seed Mollie Sclichter of Oakland Catholic.

Section 3-2A – The top two seeds, Hampton’s Grace Stitt and North Catholic’s Brea Kelley, advanced to Thursday’s finals. Stitt defeated a pair of Indiana teammates, Gabby Sharp in the quarterfinals and Eve Kuzneski 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 in the semifinals. Kelley defeated her sister, Delaney Kelley, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the semis.

Section 4-2A – Beaver’s Anna Mrkonja and Neshannock’s Maddie Arrow held serve as the top two seeds and will meet in Thursday’s final. Mrkonja got past Lincoln Park’s Bella Colatriano in the semifinals and Arrow defeated Blackhawk’s Lily Ceriani.

Section 5-2A – Our Lady of the Sacred Heart’s Therese Bernas and Sewickley Academy’s Rayna Thakkar breezed into Thursday’s final as the top two seeds, each sweeping their semifinal match. Bernas beat Aquinas Academy’s Maggie McBride and Thakkar defeated Carlynton’s Grace Prepelka.
