High school roundup for Sept. 22, 2018: Blackhawk shuts out Montour

In a Class 4A football game resumed from Friday night, Kenneth Gawley ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns to lead Blackhawk to a 28-0 shutout at Montour (0-5, 0-2) in the Northwest 8 Conference on Saturday morning.

Marques Watson-Trent added 89 rushing yards and one touchdown. Jordan Wright returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown for Blackhawk (5-0, 4-0), which held Montour to 58 total yards and five first downs.

South Fayette 48, Hopewell 0 — Jamie Diven completed 12 of 22 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns to guide No. 2 South Fayette (4-1, 2-0) to a Class 4A Northwest 8 Conference win.

Burgettstown 23, South Side Beaver 21 — Jake Lounder rushed for two touchdowns and Cole Shergi returned the second half kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown as Burgettstown (4-0, 3-0) defeated South Side Beaver (4-1, 2-1) in the Three Rivers Conference. Derek Franchek ran for 127 yards and a touchdown for South Side. The game picked up in with 8:53 left in the third quarter after being suspended Friday night.

Boys soccer

Shady Side Academy 10, Burrell 0 — Max Farner scored four goals and Jack Naughton added three as Shady Side Academy (4-1-1) defeated Burrell (3-4-2, 3-4-0) in Section 2-AA. Shady Side Academy scored 10 goals for the second straight game.

Elizabeth Forward 6, South Allegheny 0 — Andrew Smith scored three goals to lead Elizabeth Forward (5-4, 5-2) to the Section 1-AA win against South Allegheny (2-8, 1-6).

Bentworth 4, California 1 — Leyton Hustava scored two goals and an assist to lead Bentworth (3-7, 2-5) to the Section 4-A win against California (0-9, 0-7).

Thomas Jefferson 3, Chartiers Valley 1 — In Section 3-AAA, A.J. Meshanko two goals and Preston Lutz added the other as Thomas Jefferson (6-2-1, 5-1-1) beat Chartiers Valley (3-5-2, 3-3-1). Meshanko and Lutz each have nine goals on the season.

Greensburg Salem 4, Albert Gallatin 0 — Chris Writt had a hat trick and Jeremy Kappel added a goal as Greensburg Salem won a Section 3-3A game.

Sage Parsley and Shayne Kasic split time in goal to record the shutout for the Golden Lions (6-3, 5-2).

Connellsville 6, Hempfield 0 — Luke Peperack and Ethan Price scored twice each to lead Connellsville (7-3, 5-3) past Hempfield (2-7, 2-6) for a Section 3-4A win.

Penn-Trafford 3, Woodland Hills 0 — Tyler Pisarek scored two goals and an assist to lead Penn-Trafford (5-3-1, 5-2-1) to the Section 3-4A win against Woodland Hills (0-6, 0-6). Nate Schlessinger added a goal and two assists.

Franklin Regional 10, Gateway 0 — In Section 4-AAA, Auston Kranick recorded the hat trick as Franklin Regional (8-0, 7-0) downed Gateway (2-8, 1-6).

Freeport 5, Derry 0 — Hunter Hardin tallied four goals as Freeport (6-4, 4-3) blanked Section 2-AA foe Derry (2-5, 1-5).

Springdale 3, Carlynton 1 — Alex Barch, Mike Krason and Ethrin Duku all scored and keeper Mike Zolnierczyk tallied eight saves as Class A No. 5 Springdale picked up the Section 3-A win over rival Carlynton ( 6-3-1, 3-3-1). Mike Mitchell had the lone assist for Springdale (7-0-1, 6-0-1).

Deer Lakes 7, Valley 1 — Ronan Renter and Ryan Rodgers both scored a pair of goals to pace Class AA No. 3 Deer Lakes past Valley (0-8, 0-7) in a Section 2-AA matchup. AJ Dorman and Collton Spence both chipped in with goals for the Lancers. Michael Sullivan, Alex Rodgers, Spence, Rodgers and Devin Murray all tallied assists for Deer Lakes (9-0-1, 6-0-1). Goalkeeper Austin Mrvantz had three saves for Deer Lakes.

St. Joseph 11, Geibel 0 — Daniel Fabregás and Rylan Zale both turned in hat tricks and Andrew Sullivan scored a pair of goals to lead St. Joseph past Section 2-A rival Geibel (1-6, 1-5).

Goalkeeper Mason Hurlbit finished with three saves for the Spartans.

Girls soccer

Quigley 4, Mohawk 3 — Ashley Mineard scored all four of Quigley’s goals in its Section 3-A win over Mohawk (3-3-1, 3-2-1).

South Fayette 4, Thomas Jefferson 3 — Rachel Wais scored twice and Annalisa Mariano added a goal and an assist as South Fayette (6-2) beat Thomas Jefferson (2-6) in a nonsection game.

Burrell 6, Knoch 2 — Annie Weimer scored a pair of goals to pace the Bucs past nonsection foe Knoch (1-7, 1-4). Jordyn Kowalkowski, Megan Malits, Madison Schaub and Maia Ferra all notched goals for Burrell (5-1-1, 3-1). Lindsie Galbreath became the second player in school history to score 100 career points for Knoch.

Deer Lakes 7, Ligonier Valley 1 — Madeline Boulos tallied four goals and added an assist as Class AA No. 5 ranked Deer Lakes (6-2, 5-1) rolled to a convincing win over nonsection foe Ligonier Valley.

Kiski Area 8, Latrobe 0 — Faith Andree and Christa Palla both scored a pair of goals to lead Kiski Area past nonsection rival Latrobe (1-7, 1-4).

Mt. Pleasant 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 — In nonsection play, Megan Liberoni scored two goals as Mt. Pleasant (5-4) shut out Elizabeth Forward (1-5).

Cross country

In the boys Class AAA race at the PIAA Foundation Meet in Hershey, North Allegheny won with 78 points as WPIAL teams took the top three places. Seneca Valley finished second with 81 points, followed by Mt. Lebanon’s 156 points.

North Allegheny’s Zachary Kinne won the race with a time of 15:55, followed by teammate Daniel McGoey (15:58). Mt. Lebanon’s Patrick Anderson placed third with a time of 16:00 while Wallenpaupack’ Tyler Wirth (16:17) and Seneca Valley’s Sam Owori (16:26) rounded out the top five.

Grove City won the boys Class AA race with 96 points, followed by Greensburg Salem’s 99 points. Josh Lewis of North East won with a time of 16:10. In Class A, Jack Miller won with a time of 16:18 while his team placed first with 63 points. Winchester Thurston finished second.

On the girls side, North Allegheny won Class AAA with 66 points, followed by Central Bucks West (112), Fox Chapel (126), State College (182) and STrath Haven (224). Grace Forbes of Strath Haven won with a time of 18:53, followed by North Allegheny’s Hannah Lindgren (19:17), Fox Chapel’s Sarena Seeger (19:27) and Grece Sisson (19:35) and Pottsgrove’s Naomi Hillen (19:41).

Northern won the Class AA race with 150 points while Vincentian placed first in Class A with 98 points.
