High school roundup: Hempfield softball logs 2 wins at tourney

The Hempfield softball team won a pair of games at the Central Mountain tournament Saturday.

The Class 6A No. 1 Spartans improved to 11-1 overall with a 10-0 victory over DuBois and a 6-1 win over Seneca Valley.

Against Seneca Valley, Laura Fox homered, doubled and had two RBIs, and Emma Hoffner had two hits and two RBIs.

Maddie Uschock allowed one run on eight hits and had eight strikeouts.

Against DuBois, Fox was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs. She also scored four runs.

Uschock threw a six-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Baseball

Avonworth 8, Beaver Falls 0 — Ryan Felter had three hits, and Dennis Manko tossed a two-hitter as Avonworth (10-2, 8-2) won a Section 2-3A game.

Carmichaels 13, Fort Cherry 2 — In Section 1-2A, Al Cree doubled, homered and drove in five runs to lead Carmichaels (9-2, 9-1) to its ninth consecutive win by defeating Fort Cherry (6-3, 6-3). Logan Mayhle added a home run and picked up the win on the mound. Hunter Terpack went 3 for 4 for Fort Cherry.

Bethel Park 5, Hempfield 4 — Kevin Kogler hit a walk-off double to give Bethel Park (10-3) a nonsection win. Anthony Strangis was 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Black Hawks.

Luke Hudson and Justin Wright homered for Hempfield (11-5), which has lost three straight games.

Homer-Center 10, Derry 2 — Nate Davis pitched 4 13 innings for the win and drove in two runs at the plate as Homer-Center defeated Derry (3-11) in nonsection play. Ryan Bushey had two hits for Derry.

Freeport 12, Indiana 2 — One day after losing its first game of the season to Section 1-4A rival Deer Lakes, Class 4A No. 2-ranked Freeport got back in the win column over section foe Indiana in five innings.

Brodey Cowan went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Freeport (8-1, 8-1). Matt Charlton singled, doubled and knocked in two RBIs for the Yellowjackets. Freeport pitcher Sean Furlong gave up two hits and struck our four in the win.

Ryan Keegan hit a solo home run for Indiana (2-5, 2-5).

Greensburg Central Catholic 6, Johnstown 4 — Ethan Bailey had three hits and three RBIs to propel Greensburg Central Catholic (8-4) to a nonsection win. James Rice, Thomas Voelker and Paul Rice all had two hits.

Penn Cambria 8, Greensburg Central Catholic 7 — Ashton Buck went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead Penn Cambria to a nonsection win over visiting Greensburg Central Catholic. Ethan Bailey went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the loss. Penn Cambria jumped to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning before Greensburg Central Catholic scored five in the third to take the lead. The Centurions went ahead by two runs in the top of the fifth after Penn Cambria tied it an inning earlier. But in the botton of the fifth inning, Penn Cambria scored three runs to take the lead for good.

Kiski Area 2, Mars 1 — Garret Polka hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Kiski Area (2-7, 2-6) a Section 1-5A victory. Ryan Rametta threw a four-hitter with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Serra Catholic 21, Apollo-Ridge 0 — No. 1 Serra Catholic (14-0, 10-0) scored 13 runs in the sixth inning as it qualified for the playoffs for the 18th consecutive season by beating Apollo-Ridge (4-4, 4-4) in Section 3-2A. Patrick Brennan went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, and Mark Black went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.
