High school wrestling notebook: A call to the Hall for Western Pa. trio

Greensburg Salem graduate Greg Jones, Norwin wrestling coach Vince DeAugustine and former coach Floyd Marshall will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

This is the PWCA’s 50 ^th anniversary.

Jones, a 2000 Greensburg Salem grad, was a three-time NCAA Division I champion at West Virginia. He won the 174-pound title in 2002 and 184-pound titles in 2004 and ‘05. He also won the Outstanding Wrestler Award in 2005. He was a three-time WPIAL champion and a PIAA champion in 2000.

DeAugustine, a 1997 Hempfield graduate, was a two-time PIAA Class AAA champion and a three-time WPIAL and Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association champion.

At Hempfield, he coached the wrestling team to a WPIAL title. He also guided six PIAA champions, 12 WPIAL champions and 28 PIAA placewinners.

Marshall, a 1960 Burgettstown graduate, was a three-time WPIAL champion and a two-time PIAA runner-up.

He compiled a 130-98-3 record as a coach at Norwin.

Hempfield rules at Moon

No. 3-ranked Hempfield improved to 6-0 overall by going 5-0 at the Moon Duals on Saturday.

The Spartans defeated Beth-Center, 61-12; Moon, 72-6; Mt. Lebanon, 48-26; South Fayette, 51-12; and Upper St. Clair, 58-15.

Ethan Berginc (113 pounds), Kyle Burkholder (120), Ty Linsenbigler (145) and Dillon Ferretti (220) all went 5-0 with four pins. Briar Priest (106) and Jared Brean (132) also were 5-0.

The Spartans host Latrobe at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a WPIAL Class AAA, Section 1-B match.

Tigers take Panthers Holiday Classic

North Allegheny won the annual Panthers Holiday Classic sponsored by Penn Cambria on Saturday at Mt. Aloysius College in Cresson.

The Tigers finished with 163 points and edged St. Joseph Catholic Academy, with 155.

North Allegheny had seven placewinners, including champion Dylan Coy at 106.

Jon Hoover placed third at 170, while Max Stedeford (120), Nick Marcenelle (160) and Freddy Junko (126) each finished fourth.

Thomas Jefferson placed sixth but had two champions: Alex Weber (152) and Max Shaw (195).

Mt. Pleasant freshman Dayton Pitzer won the 182-pound title and scored four pins. The Vikings’ Luke Geibig (106) placed fourth, while Damien George (120) and Noah Teeter (126) finished seventh.

Valley heavyweight Dave Schuffert placed second, and Noah Hutcherson (170) finished fifth.

Six WPIAL wrestlers win at KOM

Franklin Regional had three wrestlers win titles Saturday at the King of the Mountain tournament at Central Mountain — Carter Dibert (106 pounds), Colton Camacho (132) and Mason Spears (138). The Panthers placed fifth and had five placewinners.

Freshman Finn Solomon (113) took third. He pinned Council Rock South’s Kyle Waterman, the No. 1 seed who placed fifth at states in 2018. Garrett Thompson placed fifth at 120.

Seneca Valley finished second with nine placewinners, including champions Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (120) and Dylan Chappell (113). Drew Vlasnik (138) and Nick Montalbano (152) placed second and Jason Geyer (132) was third.

Burrell finished seventh and had four placewinners. Ian Oswalt (126) was a champion while Austin Mele (170) and Anthony Corrado (138) placed third. Noah Linderman (152) ended up fifth.

Penn-Trafford had two placewinners. Nick Coy (145) finished second and Tony Zona (160) seventh.
