You never know which bout in a wrestling match could be the turning point.

In Wednesday’s nonsection match between No. 4 Norwin and No. 10 Canon-McMillan it happened to be the first one.

Knights senior Gage Mamie rallied from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Mason Calgaro, 9-6, in overtime. The win propelled Norwin to a 39-20 victory.

The Knights won eight of the 13 bouts and got pins from Coleton Klipa (113 pounds), Landon Sidun (120) and Jack White (162). Luke Butera (106) received a forfeit. Evan Suedhoff (145) recorded a technical fall, and Nathan Klingensmith (138) won by major decision.

The Knights showed they could be a team that will be a threat this season.

“That was definitely a big win for us,” Norwin coach Kyle Martin said. “Gage showed his leadership and his grit that we kind of have in the practice room every single day.

“Wrestling is hard, and you’re going to be put in some really hard situations and it’s how you develop character. I was proud how everyone competed.”

After Mamie’s win at 152, White pinned Mikhail Krenzelak with a cradle.

Canon-McMillan, which fielded a lineup filed with freshmen and sophomores, won the next four bouts to grab a 15-9 lead.

Brayden Collins pinned Bill Petko at 215, and Dakota Carmona used a seven-point move in the final 10 seconds to defeat Sebastian Summerville, 8-3, at heavyweight.

“Some may think I’m disappointed with the end of the heavyweight match,” Martin said. “I wasn’t. I liked is aggressiveness.”

Norwin, other than 132 pounds, dominated the lower weights.

Klipa and Sidun produced consecutive first-period pins as the Knights took control of the match 27-15.

“We scheduled Norwin for a reason,” Canon-McMillan first-year coach Jordan Maier said. “We wanted to see where we stood. We have some work to do.

“We had a weight issue in the lower weights, but when we get that worked out I’d like to see where we stand. Some of our freshmen made middle school mistakes that are correctable.”

The Big Macs’ most experienced wrestler, Collier Hartman, who was a PIAA qualifier, won by technical fall at 132.

“We’re going to be a different team later this season,” Martin said. “Right now, we have to continue to work hard in the practice room.”

Canon-McMillan girls earn split

The Canon-McMillan girls team, ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL, defeated Norwin, 48-24.

The Big Macs recorded xx pins. They were by Siena Williams-VanBalen (118), Marlee Solomon (124), Kiera Pugh (142), Evangeline Gray (148), Natalie Rush (190) and London Ellis (235).

Norwin got pins from Avalin Barry (130), Josephine Dollman (136) and Katsyn Champion (155).
