Robby Carmody joined a star-studded list that includes Kobe Bryant and Rasheed Wallace when the Mars basketball player was named Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year on Thursday.

Carmody, a 6-foot-4 senior and Notre Dame recruit, led the WPIAL in scoring this season with a 33.7-point average and topped 2,000 for his career.

He’s the first WPIAL athlete to win the boys basketball Gatorade award since Moon’s Brian Walsh in 2008. Other winners from the WPIAL were Blackhawk’s Brandon Fuss-Cheatham (2000) and Dante Calabria (1992) and Shaler’s Danny Fortson (1994).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s Sam Breen won the girls Gatorade award last season.

Carmody led Mars (21-4) to the WPIAL Class 5A title last week at Petersen Events Center. The Planets start the state playoffs at 8 p.m. Friday against Hampton at Fox Chapel.

Bryant won the award in 1996 and Wallace won in 1993.
