Norwin notebook: Pair of basketball standouts headed to Clarion

Call it a package deal.

A pair of Norwin girls basketball players are headed for the same college program.

Guards Kendall Berger and Averi Brozeski announced they both have committed to Clarion of the NCAA Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Wheeling and West Virginia Wesleyan also offered scholarships to both players.

Berger also had offers from Fairmont State and Seton Hill.

Brozeski had an offer from IUP.

Both girls were key players on last year’s WPIAL Class 6A championship team. Berger was the second-leading scorer for the Knights, and Brozeski was a key reserve.Another senior, Bella Furno, also has an opportunity to play at West Virginia Wesleyan.

Runners up

Norwin’s girls cross country team finished second at the Gingerbread Man Running Company Kiski Invitational.

Annie Czajkowski placed seventh in 18:59.2 to lead the team.

Knight’s victorious

After two straight losses, the Norwin boys soccer team erupted for a season high for goals against Hempfield in the Section 1-4A opener.

Daniel Maddock found the net four times, while Caleb Maddock, Cam Ash, Ian Natale, Tristian Josephic, Elijah Baer and Alex Krance had one apiece in a 10-0 victory that moved the defending WPIAL champion Knights to 2-2 on the season.

Lady Knights win opener

The Norwin girls soccer team hit the gas pedal in its Section 1-4A opener, downing Hempfield, 9-0.

Neeva Graham had two goals, and Julia Bursick, Hannah Amantea, Lindsay Reese, Nicole Bown, Gigi Fuchel, Bella Buscemi and Neliah Schade each had one score.

The Lady Knights improved to 2-2 overall.

Sudden victory

Norwin’s boys golf team needed a playoff to edge past rival Penn-Trafford at Manor Valley Golf Course after the teams tied at 213 after nine holes.

Norwin’s four players defeated Penn-Trafford’s, 19-22, in a sudden death playoff.

Dom Cerilli led Norwin with a 38, while Aiden Dzurko had a 40 for Penn-Trafford.
