Pgh Central Catholic’s Brent Rodgers Bags WPIAL Boys AAA Golf Title

On a perfect day for scoring the WPIAL Boys Golf AAA finalists did just that at Fox Chapel Golf Club in the championship tournament. 14 players shot 77 or better on the par 70 course off Fox Chapel road, led by WPIAL champion Brent Rodgers. Rodgers, a junior from Pittsburgh Central Catholic carded an even par 70 to take home the gold medal.

The champ was in the fourth group of the day and after carding his 70 had to wait around for about and hour and a half before being certain he had won gold. Going out early was fine with Rodgers who told MSA Sports, "Hey if you go out in the early groups nobody has any expectations on you, so you are free to relax and play your game." Despite the face that he was playing 7 groups in front of some favorites Rodgers said he knew what he was capable of, telling MSA he knew he was one of a handful of guys capable of shooting a low score in the championship.

Actually a bunch of guys hit low numbers for the day with the cut line hitting 77. Defending champion Zack Taylor shot a 79 in the first group of the day. Indiana's Matt Holuta playing in the ninth group had a chance to tie Rodgers with a birdie on 18 but could not manage the long birdie putt and settled for silver.

Upper Saint Clair junior Thomas Steve played it out in the 11th group of the day with a very nice two over par 72. Will Wears a senior from Latrobe had a chance on the back nine as he made the turn a stroke under par put he shot five over on the back to finish with a solid 74, but it was not enough to win the Gold. Wears teammate a sophomore Chad Kissell also carded a 74 on the day. Here are all the scores for the 14 players who will advance to the state regionals, as well as the rest of the field from the 2013 WPIAL AAA Boys Individual Golf Championship.
