PIAA soccer playoffs roundup: Seneca Valley boys advance after double-overtime win

Keegan McVicker scored in double overtime to lift the Seneca Valley boys soccer team to a 3-2 victory over District 3’s Hempfield in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs Tuesday night at Hempfield Area’s Spartan Stadium.

Jackson Wotus and Luke Rupert scored in regulation for the WPIAL champion Raiders (18-2-1), who will play District 1 runner-up Abington in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

State College 2, Norwin 1 — Marc Rodgers scored five minutes into overtime to lift District 6 champion State College to a win over Norwin in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAAA playoffs at Bald Eagle Area.

Carter Breen scored for Norwin (17-4-1) with 25 minutes left to tie the game at one.

Cathedral Prep 1, Thomas Jefferson 0 — In the PIAA Class AAA first round at Fairview, Erie’s Cathedral Prep shut out WPIAL third-place finisher Thomas Jefferson (16-6-1) with a goal in the final minutes.

West Allegheny 4, Bradford 1 — Will Douglas had two goals, and Nate Dragisich and Evan Blunkosky each added goals to guide WPIAL runner-up West Allegheny (20-2) to a PIAA Class AAA first-round win at Brockway.

West Allegheny will play Hershey in the quarterfinals.

Quaker Valley 6, Westmont Hilltop 0 — WPIAL runner-up Quaker Valley bounced back from a title-game loss to shut out District 6 champ Westmont Hilltop.

Weston Grant and Fisher Hemwall each scored twice, and Franky Fernandez had a goal and assist for the Quakers. Dom Reiter also scored in the win.

The Quakers (19-4) will play Deer Lakes in the quarterfinals.

Shady Side Academy 1, Bedford 0 — At Moon, Max Farner scored for WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (13-6-1), as the Indians won a PIAA Class AA first-round game.

The Indians will play Mercyhurst Prep in the quarterfinals.

Avonworth 4, West Shamokin 1 — The Lopes (21-0-1) won a PIAA playoff game for the first time, topping District 6 champion West Shamokin in the Class A first round at Mars.

WPIAL champion Avonworth will play District 5 champion Rockwood in the quarterfinals.

Seton LaSalle 1, Brockway 0 — Ethan Gardner scored and Sam Reinhart secured the shutout as WPIAL third-place finisher Seton LaSalle (19-4) won a PIAA Class A first-round game at DuBois.

The Rebels will play Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Girls soccer

Peters Township 3, McDowell 1 — CeCe Scott’s goal midway through the second half snapped a tie, and Sarah Heisinger added an insurance goal eight minutes later to give Peters Township a victory over McDowell in a PIAA Class AAAA first-round game at Dollinger Field in Erie. Heisinger scored twice for the Indians (17-4), the WPIAL runner-up.

Seneca Valley 2, Central Dauphin 1 (PK) — Keeper Morgan Sinan scored the game-winning penalty kick in a shootout as WPIAL champion Seneca Valley (17-2) captured a PIAA Class AAAA first-round win at Hempfield.

Mia Zec scored in the first half for the Raiders, who will play District 1 runner-up Souderton in the quarterfinals.

Hampton 3, Hickory 1 — Logan Nicklas scored twice and Courtney Coholich added a goal as WPIAL third-place finisher Hampton (18-5) won a PIAA Class AAA first-round game at Slippery Rock.

Mars 2, Manheim Central 0 — Caroline Wroblewski and Taylor Hamlett scored, and Claire Valentine posted the shutout as WPIAL runner-up Mars (19-1) won a PIAA Class AAA first-round game at Cedar Crest.

The Planets will play District 11 champion Blue Mountain in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Oakland Catholic 3, Hollidaysburg 1 — WPIAL champion Oakland Catholic (19-1) opened the PIAA Class AAA playoffs with a victory over District 6 champion Hollidaysburg (15-5) at Norwin. The Eagles, who got goals from Victoria Calhoun in the first half and Anna Sproule and Hannah Henn in the second half, advance to the quarterfinals Saturday against Hampton at a site to be determined.

Bedford 4, Hopewell 2 — Jenna Broan scored twice to lead District 5 champion Bedford to a PIAA Class AA first-round win over Hopewell (15-3-1) at Windber.

Mercyhurst Prep 2, Avonworth 1 (OT) — Ashley Michaels scored with three minutes left in overtime as District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep beat Avonworth (14-7-2) in the PIAA Class AA first round at Fairview.

South Park 3, Somerset 0 — Haleigh Finale scored twice and Danielle DeProspo also tallied a goal as WPIAL champion South Park (20-2) rolled to a PIAA Class AA first-round win at Moon. Ali Miklos earned the shutout.

Bentworth 5, Brockway 2 — Jocelyn Timlin scored four times, and Paige Marshalek added a goal as WPIAL runner-up Bentworth (18-3) won a PIAA Class A first-round game at DuBois.

It marked the program’s first PIAA tournament victory.

Freedom 7, Rockwood 0 — Michaela Watkins and Jayden Sharpless each had three goals as WPIAL champion Freedom (21-1) rolled to a PIAA Class A first-round win at Mars.

The Bulldogs will play Wilmington in the quarterfinals.

Shady Side Academy 2, Windber 0 — Callie Davis and Melissa Riggins scored to lift WPIAL third-place finisher Shady Side Academy (13-4) to a PIAA Class A first-round win at Somerset. The Indians will play Bentworth in the quarterfinals.
