SHIPPENSBURG — Franklin Regional senior Jacob Shedd has been striving to surpass 45 feet in the triple jump all season.

On Friday at the PIAA Class AAA track and field championships at Shippensburg's Seth Grove Stadium, he accomplished his goal.

That was good enough to earn a medal for finishing seventh.

Shedd jumped 45 feet, 91⁄2 inches in the preliminaries to advance to the finals. He reached 46 feet twice in the finals, but he fouled on all three of his attempts.

“That third jump was probably a (miss by a) quarter inch,” Shedd said. “But I'm still happy. I was seeded 20th, and to medal in this field is amazing.

“I jumped far, and I jumped well in all six jumps. I'm happy with my performance. Seventh place in the state isn't too bad at all.”

Shedd owns the school record and hopes it stands for awhile.

“I hope to have my name on the school record board for a long time,” Shedd said. “I'm sure someone will beat it, but for now having my name up there is impressive and my lasting mark on the school.”

Broadway has top time

Derry senior Shawn Broadway has been striving for a shot at PIAA gold all season.

He came up short during wrestling season, but now the three-sport standout has a chance to win gold on the track.

Broadway advanced to Saturday's 110-meter hurdles semifinals and to the 300-meter hurdles finals.

His time of 38.79 seconds in the 300 was the fastest during the preliminary round and a personal record.

Albert Taylor still holds the school record of 38.2 seconds.

“I have another race to try for the record,” Broadway said.

Johnson wins state title

Valley senior Darius Johnson ended his high school career by winning the PIAA Class AA high jump title with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches.

He edged Hopewell's Dantae Ranieri, who was second with a jump of 6-6.

The other WPIAL athlete to claim a gold medal Friday was South Park junior Maura Huwalt, who won the discus with a throw of 139-1.

Placing second were Bentworth senior Brenna Cavanaugh in the Class AA long jump (17-101⁄2) and Hopewell senior Noah Drudy in the javelin, with a toss of 215 feet.

Binda, Anderson advance

Greensburg Salem junior Cam Binda and junior Malia Anderson advanced to the finals in their events as they attempt to become the school's first PIAA champions.

Binda ran a 4:18.94 in his 1,600-meter preliminary race and heads to the finals seeded third behind Grove City's Jonah Powell (4:18.18) and Mt. Lebanon's Patrick Anderson (4:18.74). Binda was the WPIAL champion. His twin brother, Dylan, also qualified for the finals.

Anderson ran 2:14.29 in the 800-meter preliminary and is seeded second behind Strath Haven's Grace Forbes (2:13.48).

Franklin Regional's Matt Busche, the WPIAL 800-meter champion, is seeded second headed to the finals. Wyoming Valley West's Mitchell Forbes ran a 1:54.77 and Busche a 1:54.79.
