Pitt basketball coach Jeff Capel will serve on the USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee.
Capel will help select participants who have concluded their freshman year of college or represent the high school classes of 2025 and 2026 to be on the U19 team.
Training camp for the 33 athletes expected to participate begins Saturday at the Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The 12-member roster is expected to be announced before the team departs for the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup in Switzerland later this month.
Capel has extensive experience serving with USA Basketball, being on multiple staffs that won gold medals at international events.
He was the assistant coach for the U.S. team at the World University Games in 2005 that won the gold medal and head coach for the U.S. Men’s U18 National team at the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship, winning gold as well.
He worked with the USA men’s national team starting in 2013, transitioning into working with the FIBA World Cup team in 2014 as an assistant and continuing that same role at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Both the 2014 and 2016 teams won the gold medal with Capel as assistant coach.
