Pittsburgh high school roundup: No. 1 Quaker Valley boys top No. 2 New Castle

The top two boys basketball teams in WPIAL Class 4A faced off Tuesday in an early-season showdown, and fans were treated to a back-and-forth contest with plenty of elite athletes.

No. 1 Quaker Valley finished strong to earn a 62-53 victory over No. 2 New Castle in a Section 2 matchup.

Coletrane Washington scored 24 points, Ryan Stowers had 18 and Danny Conlan added 11 for the Quakers (4-0, 2-0), who finished on a 24-15 run.

Marcus Hooker had 26 points for New Castle (4-2, 1-1).

Central Valley 52, Beaver Falls 45 — Tyler Walker had 22 points to lead No. 5 Central Valley (3-2, 1-1) won in Section 2-4A. Noah Vaughan had 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, for Beaver Falls (1-4, 1-1).

Butler 82, Shaler 58 — Ethan Morton had 38 points as No. 1 Butler (6-0, 2-0) won in Section 1-6A.

Central Catholic 50, North Hills 44 — Cole Mason had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Maurice Shipman added 12 points as Central Catholic (2-3, 2-0) won a Section 1-6A game. Garret Barto had 23 points and 12 rebounds for North Hills (0-5, 0-2).

Pine-Richland 62, North Allegheny 54 — Greg Shulkosky had 18 points and Daniel Petcash scored 16 as No. 4 Pine-Richland (4-1, 1-0) won a Section 1-6A game. Curtis Aiken had 18 points for the Tigers (0-4, 0-2).

Connellsville 45, Peters Township 39 — Seth Younkin had 27 points to lift Connellsville (5-1, 2-0) to a Section 2-6A win.

Woodland Hills 75, Fox Chapel 60 — Trey Josey scored 22 points to pace Class 6A No. 5 Woodland Hills to a Section 3 win. Keandre Bowles followed up with 17 points and Amante Britt added 12 for Woodland Hills (5-0, 2-0). Carson Cohen led Fox Chapel (4-1, 1-1) with 26 points.

Trinity 65, McKeesport 62 — Joey Koroly had 23 points to guide Trinity (4-1, 2-0) to a Section 1-5A victory.

West Allegheny 65, Knoch 48 — Dre Baldwin had 28 points to lift West Allegheny (3-2, 2-0) to a Section 2-5A win.

South Fayette 65, Elizabeth Forward 46 — Conner Mislan had 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lead South Fayette (3-2, 1-1) to a Section 3-4A win.

Serra Catholic 69, Riverview 26 — Jimmy Moon led Serra Catholic (4-1, 1-0) with 20 points in a Section 1-2A victory.

Chartiers-Houston 72, Carmichaels 48 — Andrew Clark had 27 points as No. 4 Chartiers-Houston (4-1, 1-0) won in Section 2-2A.

Fort Cherry 78, California 46 — Ryhan Culberson scored 34 points as Fort Cherry (2-3, 2-0) rolled to a Section 2-2A win.

OLSH 84, Shenango 54 — Donovan Johnson had 23 points, and Dante Spadafora added 22 as No. 3 OLSH (5-1, 2-0) won a Section 3-2A game. Austin Wigley had 21 points and Rico Tate had 17 rebounds for the Chargers.

Sto-Rox 83, Laurel 70 — Brandon Deloe had 33 points and Malik Smith 20 added 20 as Sto-Rox (2-3, 1-1) won a 3-2A game.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 57, Vincentian Academy 46 — Bryan Davidson tallied 20 points to lead Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (2-3) to a nonsection win.

Eden Christian Academy 86, Beaver County Christian 49 — Chase Haring had 23 points as Eden Christian Academy (5-0) won a nonsection game.

Girls basketball

Mars 58, Montour 50 — Tai Johnson had 16 points and Lauren Wasylson added 14 as Class 5A No. 5 Mars (3-3) won a nonsection contest. Amalia Esposito had 24 points for Montour (1-5).

Shady Side Academy 51, Riverview 27 — Arianna Goitz had 26 points, including eight 3-pointers, for Shady Side Academy (4-2) in a nonsection win.
