The Quaker Valley boys soccer team produced quite the bounce-back performance Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs with a 6-0 win over District 6 champion Westmont Hilltop.

Quaker Valley (19-4) scored at least six goals in a game for the 11 th time this season and posted its 14 th shutout. Senior Dom Lagnese helped record the shutout in goal for the Quakers.

The loss was Westmont’s first of the season after 20 consecutive victories.

Quakers face Deer Lakes in PIAA quarterfinals

It will be an all-WPIAL matchup in the PIAA AA boys soccer quarterfinals Saturday as Quaker Valley takes on Deer Lakes at 3 p.m. at North Allegheny High School.

The Quakers hope to take care of business against the Lancers as that might set up a rematch with Shady Side Academy.

But the Indians have a test Saturday at Mars High School against District 10 runner-up Mercyhurst Prep.

Deer Lakes (19-1-1) fell victim to Shady Side Academy 1-0 in the WPIAL semifinals but bounced back in the consolation game with a 7-1 win over Charleroi.

On Tuesday, the Lancers topped District 10 champion Fairview 1-0 with a goal in the second overtime.

Boys hoops teams hope to keep rolling in 2018-19

The winter sports season for the WPIAL begins Nov. 16 with the start of official preseason practices.

The Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy boys basketball teams enjoyed memorable seasons in 2017-18, and they are hoping to repeat those results this winter.

The Quakers finished 26-2 overall last year and claimed the Section 2-4A title with a perfect 14-0 mark. They lost their first game of the season to section rival New Castle 57-52 in the WPIAL championship game at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center.

QV then won three straight in the PIAA playoffs before falling to Sharon in the semifinals.

Sewickley Academy, which finished 24-5 last year, had four battles against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart last year, as they played twice in Section 3-2A play and twice in the postseason.

The teams split during the regular season, and Sewickley Academy beat OLSH for the WPIAL title before the Chargers got revenge on the Panthers by two points in the state semifinals.

New Castle and Quaker Valley will see each other at least two times this season as they again are in the same section. The same is true for Sewickley Academy and OLSH.

The season begins the weekend of Dec. 7.
