The Seton-LaSalle Rebels (22-4) rolled to their sixth WPIAL Girls basketball championship Friday afternoon at A.J. Palumbo Center, defeating the Burrell Bucs (25-1) by a score of 55-34.

The Rebels opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back. Burrell had trouble with the Rebels pressure defense turning it over on their first four possessions and eight times in the first quarter. The Bucs turned it over 26 times on the night. The Rebels were able to convert many of those turnovers into fast break points.

The Rebels led 17-7 at the end of the first and were never challenged, pushing the lead to 32-12 at halftime. Seton-LaSalle’ss domination on the glass at both ends was a huge contribution to the win, the Rebels outrebounded the Bucs 33-18. Seton-LaSalle had three players finish in double digits for first year head coach Spencer Stefko. Yacine Diop and Shaunay Edmonds tied for team and game-high honors with 15 points each. Naje Gibson chipped in with 10 points on the evening. Diop added 13 rebounds.

The Bucs suffered their first loss of the 2013-2014 campaign and fall to 25-1 for head coach Meghan Ziemianski. Junior Sydney Bordanaro led the way for Burrell in the loss with 15 points, including four three-pointers. She was the only Burrell player to reach double digits as Kelsey Oddis added seven in the loss.

Seton-LaSalle connected on 22-of-55 shots from the floor including hitting on 2-of-13 from beyond the arc. Burrell hit 14 of their 37 shots on the night including 50% (6 of 12) from beyond the three-point line. The Rebels were playing in their 6th straight WPIAL championship and won the title for the third time in the last four years.
Both teams continue on into the PIAA tournament beginning next week.
