Softball, lacrosse playoff openers among Monday’s 3 things to watch in high school sports

The WPIAL softball playoffs start Monday afternoon with games in Class 5A , Class 2A and Class A .

There are 16 games on the schedule. The top seeds in 5A and A drew byes but Class 2A has a full 16-team bracket, so No. 1 Frazier starts its quest for consecutive WPIAL titles with a 2 p.m. matchup against Brentwood at Peters Township.

Monday's No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchups include St. Joseph's vs. Western Beaver at Fox Chapel in Class A, Shady Side Academy vs. Neshannock at Hampton in 2A, and Trinity vs. Gateway at Baldwin in 5A.

The championships are May 30-31 at Seton Hill.

Lacrosse playoffs under way

The WPIAL lacrosse playoffs also start Monday with Class 3A boys and Class 2A girls in action.

Peters Township, the defending Class 3A boys champion, hosts Sewickley Academy in a first-round matchup at 7 p.m. Hampton, the reigning Class 2A girls champion, drew a first-round bye.

The finals are May 24-25 at Robert Morris.

WPIAL board business

Monday is a busy day in Green Tree, beginning with the annual WPIAL scholar-athlete banquet followed by the monthly board of directors meeting.

The WPIAL chose 21 student-athletes to receive $1,000 scholarships at the banquet.

The boys winners were Mars' Robby Carmody, Thomas Jefferson's Garret Fairman, Winchester Thurston's Tristan Forsythe, North Allegheny's Mason Gonzalez, Central Valley's Brendan Jugan, OLSH's Christopher Kocent, Gateway's John Kromka, Mapletown's Dylan Rush and Deer Lakes' Joshua Solomon.

The girls winners were Yough's Hannah Bach, Knoch's Carlita Bozzo, Freeport's Claire Crytzer, Armstrong's Kenzie Lasher, Hopewell's Carinna Lapson, Quaker Valley's Franziska Nace, North Allegheny's Clara Savchik, West Allegheny's Ashley Seamon, Upper St. Clair's Savannah Shaw, Mt. Lebanon's Celia Tandon and Oakland Catholic's Sophia Young.
