Trib HSSN girls basketball player of the week – Kylie Fruehstorfer
School: Union
Class: Senior
Height: 5-foot-5
Position: Point guard
#Earned: As a sophomore and junior, Kylie Fruehstorfer was a part of back-to-back WPIAL Class A titles for Union. Now as a senior, she’s trying to lead the way for a third straight crown for the Scotties. This past week, she put an exclamation point on a perfect regular season. On Monday, following a long bus trip to Leechburg, Fruehstorfer led all scorers with 21 points in a one-sided Scotties win, 74-27. Thursday marked the final regular season home game as Union rolled past Eden Christian Academy, 75-12. In limited action, Fruehstorfer tallied 15 points. Then on Friday in the regular season finale, Fruehstorfer set a Union single-game scoring record when she dropped 50 points in an impressive road win at Section 4-2A champion Winchester Thurston, 60-53.
Background: Fruehstorfer will continue her basketball career starting next season at Pitt-Johnstown. Her big 50-point performance bumped her up to 443 points for the season for an average of just over 20 points per game. In the 2023 district championship game, Kylie’s older sister Kayla was a starting guard on the team. In that title game win over Aquinas Academy, 52-35, Kylie led all scorers with 20 points. In last year’s finals at The Pete, Fruehstorfer scored 11 points while teammate Kelly Cleaver led with 25 points in an overtime win over St. Joseph, 50-43. Kylie played softball through middle school but wanted to focus on basketball in high school. She also ran cross county for one season in her early years as a Scotties.
What coach says: “Kylie comes to play every night and is a fierce competitor,” Union coach Rob Nogay said. “She works constantly on her shot, and that has paid off throughout the season and especially in the last few games. Kylie is a complete player who can shoot the ball very well and can penetrate to make plays. Teams have a hard time defending her because she can hurt team’s multiple ways.
“Kylie works tirelessly on her shot, and she was hitting shots from all over the court Friday,” Nogay said of Fruehstorfer’s 50-point performance against Winchester Thurston. “When teams try to take that away, she can make plays penetrating and scoring or penetrating and dishing. When Kylie is shooting the ball well, she is very hard to stop. She likes to compete in big games, and she stepped up and took the team on her shoulders against a very good Winchester Thurston team.”
“Kylie has evolved into a great leader this year,” Nogay said. “The last few years, she complemented Kelly Cleaver, but this year, she has stepped into the leader role and led by example. As I said earlier, she has worked to become a complete player with her shot and ability to penetrate. She leads in practice and in games.
“Kylie is a great team player by her leadership,” Nogay said. “She leads by example and competes at a high level. She has the experience of playing in big games in the last few years, and that has helped her leadership. She understands the flow of game is different and doesn’t get down or frustrated when things get tough. I have full confidence in Kylie having the ball in those tough situations and her experience and leadership have paid off. I hope she can lead us to more playoff success this year.”
