Team of the week: Waynesburg

The Raiders chose to win again at the Winner’s Choice Tournament in Fairmont, W.Va.

Waynesburg went into the tournament as the defending champion and once again claimed the title, finishing with 208.5 team points, well ahead of second-place East Fairmont.

Four Waynesburg wrestlers won individual titles to help the Raiders earn the top spot out of 30 teams. Cole Homet won at 120 pounds, as did Colton Stoneking at 126, Trey Howard at 145 and Colby Morris at 160. Four other Raiders wrestlers claimed medals.

Other nominees

Kiski Area: The Class AAA No. 1 Cavaliers had a busy week with four dual meets in a four-day span, and they came through it in dominant fashion. After a 78-4 victory over Section 1-AAA opponent Plum on Wednesday, Kiski Area took down local rival Burrell, the top-ranked team in Class AA, by a 45-18 score on Friday. They then swept matches against nonsection opponent Connellsville (61-12) and Section 1-AAA foe Central Catholic (84-0) on Saturday, clinching a WPIAL playoff spot with the latter win. For those counting, the Cavaliers outscored their opponents, 268-34, in four matches.

Southmoreland: After taking down rival Yough, 54-18, to maintain control of the Crosstown Cup, the Scotties earned the team title at Saturday’s Valley Duals. Southmoreland beat Summit Academy in the quarterfinals and Allderdice in the semifinals before outlasting Ligonier Valley, 37-32, in the championship. Heavyweight Charles Tedrick’s 2-1 victory over Ben Balthaser sealed the win.

Upper St. Clair: The Panthers earned a fourth-place team finish at the Burgettstown Tournament on the strength of their top wrestlers. USC’s biggest wrestlers did the most damage: Quinn Murray won the 220-pound title, and Jake Slinger dominated the field to win the heavyweight championship. Sean Martin (152 pounds), Grant Walnoha (160) and Harvey Rauch (195) took second in their weight classes.
