The Trib HSSN Softball Team of the Week is West Allegheny, which won district gold last season and is off and running this postseason after a first-round win.

The 7-5 win over Shaler on Thursday lifted the No. 10-seed Indians into the quarterfinals, where they will face the No. 2-seed Plum.

“Our motto has always been, once you get in the playoffs, anything is possible,” West Allegheny coach Mindi McFate said. “We will prepare as much as we can and go into the game and do the best we can.”

Megan Pollinger was 3 for 4 with a double, two triples and three RBIs against Shaler.

“We had a big offensive showing. Megan Pollinger was a home run shy of the cycle,” McFate said. “Britney Wilson, Maci Priddy and Alyssa Goldstrohm had two hits each. We hit the ball well all day.

“Their outfield made some big plays, so even when we weren’t on base, we were still hitting the ball well. Angela Costa had a great day in the circle. Going into the 7th, she had only given up 2 hits.”

The crown has weighed heavy on the Indians this spring as the regular season turned into a grind. West Allegheny never won more than two in a row, but at the same time, never lost more than two straight.

Did McFate feel there was a target on the Indians’ back this spring?

“To some extent, yes,” she said. “We have tried to talk to our kids and focus only on this year. We only have three kids back from last season, so we want this group to chart their own course.”

Perhaps now that the first postseason hurdle has been cleared, this tribe of Indians is ready to go full speed ahead on another long playoff run.

“We are hopeful,” McFate said. We have made a lot of progress this season and have had to overcome a lot of adversity in terms of injuries, players being asked to change positions etc. I am really proud of our kids and the adjustments they have made. We still have work to do, but we are getting more confident each day.”
