Westmoreland high school look-ahead: Week of Dec. 10, 2018

MONDAY

Girls basketball: Hempfield will waste no time leaping into section play as the Spartans host Canon-McMillan in a Section 2-6A game. Other local games include Uniontown at Southmoreland and Waynesburg at Yough.

Boys basketball: A couple of county matchups have Belle Vernon at Washington and Burrell at Kiski Area.

Wrestling: Derry visits Latrobe in a local nonsection rivalry match.

Hockey: There are a few local PIHL games to watch, including a doubleheader at Center Ice Arena in Delmont.

Shaler plays Franklin Regional at 6 p.m., followed by Hampton vs. Penn-Trafford at 8.

Quaker Valley at Latrobe (8:35 p.m., Kirk Nevin Arena) also is on the schedule.

TUESDAY

Boys basketball: Franklin Regional’s Mike Rettger Memorial Tournament returns for a 16th time with these matchups: Monessen vs. Norwin at 6 p.m. and Westinghouse vs. Franklin Regional at 7:30. Gateway visits Latrobe in a rematch of last year’s double-overtime thriller that was won by Latrobe, 92-91.

Other nonsection games of note include East Allegheny at Greensburg Central Catholic, Jeannette at Shady Side Academy and Uniontown at Hempfield.

Girls basketball : Class 6A No. 4 Norwin will host Class 4A No. 2 Blackhawk, and Southmoreland at Greensburg Salem is another good nonsection game.

Hockey: PIHL Class A East Division leader Norwin hosts South Division leader South Fayette at 8:30 p.m. at Center Ice.

WEDNESDAY

Wrestling: Section play opens around the WPIAL, and the area has several strong matchups out of the gate, including Franklin Regional at Penn-Trafford and Kiski Area at Norwin in Section 1-AAA (A) and Hempfield at Gateway in Section 1-AAA (B). Derry wrestles Yough in a Section 3-AA (B) matchup.

Boys basketball: Greensburg Salem visits Mt. Pleasant in a matchup of first-year coaches (Mark Zahorchak, Greensburg Salem and Allan Bilinsky, Mt. Pleasant).

The Rettger Tournament concludes at Franklin Regional with consolation and championship games.

THURSDAY

Girls basketball: Norwin will get few breaks on its schedule this season, and the Knights’ Section 2-6A opener takes no mercy. Norwin hosts No. 1 Pine-Richland.

Other section openers: Franklin Regional at Gateway (2-5A), Freeport at Greensburg Salem (1-4A) and Belle Vernon at Ringgold (3-4A).

Boys basketball: Former section foes Latrobe and Penn Hills will face each other again in nonsection action. The Class 5A Indians travel to 6A No. 2 Latrobe.

FRIDAY

Boys basketball: A number of local teams open WPIAL section play. Franklin Regional hosts Hampton in Section 3-5A, Jeannette welcomes Brentwood in Section 2-2A and Greensburg Central Catholic visits St. Joseph in Section 3-A.

Girls basketball: Penn-Trafford visits Penn Hills in a Section 3-5A game.

Wrestling : Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford will be among the teams competing at the King of the Mountain Tournament at Central Mountain High School.

SATURDAY

Boys basketball : The inaugural Westmoreland County Coaches Association Shootout will be played at Hempfield. Fourteen teams will each play a single game. The schedule for the Spartans Field House is: Greensburg Central Catholic vs. Derry, noon; Monessen vs. Burrell, 1:45 p.m.; Mt. Pleasant vs. Southmoreland, 3:30; Greensburg Salem vs. Jeannette, 5:15.

Hempfield’s old gym: Hempfield vs. Belle Vernon, noon; Norwin vs. Kiski Area, 1:45 p.m.; Latrobe vs. Valley, 3:30.

Wrestling : The King of the Mountain Tournament concludes. Hempfield goes to the Moon Duals, and Derry competes at the Armstrong Duals.
