The recent bone-chilling weather forced some of the earlier district basketball games to be bumped to Wednesday.
While the dangerous chill continues outside, the action on the court heats up in the chase for first place in Section 2-5A boys basketball.
Penn Hills (6-7), Kiski Area (7-6) and Hampton (9-6) are all fighting for first place heading into the second half of section play.
The Indians are 6-1 in the section, the Cavaliers sit at 5-1, and the Talbots begin a big week at 5-2.
On Wednesday, Hampton visits Penn Hills at 7:30 p.m. in a game you can view here on Trib HSSN.
In their first meeting of the season, the Indians edged the Talbots, 46-40.
The big week for the Talbots continues Friday when Hampton is home to Kiski Area.
Kiski Area’s home game against Indiana (3-5, 6-9) was also postponed Tuesday and will be made up Saturday.
Mat 3A section finales
Wednesday marks the final night of section matches in WPIAL boys wrestling, a week before the team wrestling postseason begins.
The district schedule maker got it right in Class 3A because there are six of the nine section championships that will be decided in a winner-takes-the-section-crown mat battle.
• In Section 1-3A, West Allegheny visits Moon in a matchup of 2-0 teams.
• In Section 2-3A, Trinity travels to Canon-McMillan in a clash of 3-0 section foes.
• In Section 4-3A, Butler is home to North Allegheny with both teams tied for first place at 3-0.
• In Section 5-3A, Fox Chapel is on the road to face Kiski Area with both team sporting 3-0 section marks.
• In Section 8-3A, defending champion Connellsville welcomes Latrobe in a battle of 2-0 teams.
• In Section 9-3A, the winner of Franklin Regional at Norwin will improve to 4-0 and win the section title.
You can watch or listen to North Allegheny at Butler, Latrobe at Connellsville, Trinity at Canon-McMillan or Franklin Regional at Norwin on Trib HSSN.
2A mat supremacy
While there are also nine sections in WPIAL Class 2A boys wrestling, only three will be decided Wednesday by head-to-head matches between undefeated section foes.
• In Section 1-2A, Chartiers-Houston visits McGuffey to break a 2-0 tie for first place.
• In Section 5-2A, Central Valley hosts Freedom in a clash for the first place between 2-0 teams.
• In Section 9-2A, defending champion Burrell visits Highlands for the section title.
There are several other matches Wednesday in both 3A and 2A that could lead to co-section winners and matches that will determine a district playoff spot.
