Goal line stands and 99-yard touchdown passes. Week 6 had a little bit of everything. Here are your Plays of the Week for Week 6 of the 2012 WPIAL football season.

1.  Jeannette Jayhawks 28 – Mount Pleasant Vikings 27 in Double Overtime

A week ago, Jeannette was featured on Top Plays, but were on the other side of things, having to swallow a devastating loss to Washington due to a blocked punt late in the game. This week though, the Jayhawks can celebrate a big defensive play of their own. After playing even with Mt. Pleasant through four quarters and one overtime, Jeannette would take a 28-21 lead in the second overtime. Mt. Pleasant would score and elect to go for the two-point conversion and the win. But that is when Jeannette’s defense stepped up, stopping Tyler Mellors short of the goal line and preserving the victory, sending both teams to 5-1 on the season, but giving Jeannette a very important tie-breaker.

2.  Beaver Falls Tigers 34 – New Brighton Lions 31

Beaver Falls was on the ropes. Down 31-26 with under 5 minutes to play and pressed up against their own goal line, Tigers’ Quarterback Dan Stratton rolled out and found his Tight End Sage Curry. Curry did the rest, weaving through defenders and breaking multiple tackles on his way to a spectacular 99-yard touchdown, overcoming a 31-7 third Quarter deficit and avoiding what would have been the upset of the night. The win moves Beaver Falls to 5-1 on the season and is their second 34-31 victory in a row. Last week, they were nearly upset by winless Keystone Oaks. New Brighton falls to 1-5 on the year and have lost their last five games.

3.  North Catholic Trojans 19 – Avonworth Antelopes 15

North Catholic, trailing 15-12, got a late third Quarter touchdown on a 3-yard run by Adam Sharlow, putting them on top 19-15. The defense did the rest. Avonworth would put together a late drive, but the Trojans’ defense would stop them inside the 5-yard line on the last play of the game and giving them the win and moving North Catholic to an impressive 5-1 on the year. The loss for Avonworth (3-3, 3-2) is the second in a row by 7 points or less.
