WPIAL high school football roundup for Week 1: Bethel Park takes down Woodland Hills

Jehvonn Lewis rushed for 328 yards and three touchdowns as Bethel Park earned a 41-20 win over Woodland Hills (0-2, 0-1) in a Class 5A Allegheny 8 matchup.

William Clark paced Woodland Hills with 137 yards and one touchdown on 15 attempts. With the victory, Bethel Park (1-0, 1-0) coach Jeff Metheny earned his 200th career win.

Class 6A

Mt. Lebanon 43, Canon-McMillan 29 — In Class 6A, Seth Morgan threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 5 Mt. Lebanon (1-1, 1-0) to the win against Canon-McMillan (0-1, 0-1). Shandrew Vaughn added 101 rushing yards and a 74-yard scoring run for Mt. Lebanon while Jon Quinque tossed for 210 yards and two touchdowns for Canon-McMillan.

Class 5A

West Allegheny 41, Chartiers Valley 7 — In the Allegheny 8 Conference, Dante Flati ran for 97 yards on 13 carries and scored two TDs as West Allegheny (1-0, 1-0) won for the seventh straight time in this series. Indians QB Kam Kruze threw for 91 yards and scored on a 5-yard run. The Indians scored 28 points in the second quarter. Anthony Zambrano had 54 yards rushing on seven carries for the Colts (1-1, 0-1).

McKeesport 57, Connellsville 14 — In the Big East Conference, Konota Gaskins threw for 100 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three TDs as No. 4 McKeesport (2-0, 1-0) scored 27 points in the second quarter on way to defeating Connellsville (1-1, 0-1). Noah Maher threw for 141 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Armstrong 29, Hampton 15 — Jalen Price ran for 139 yards and Isaac Ridinger added 103 rushing yards as Armstrong (2-0, 1-0) beat Hampton (1-1, 0-1) in the Northern Conference. Max Obenrader threw for 188 yards and a touchdown to pace Hampton.

Kiski Area 31, Shaler 14 — Jack Collechi caught two touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead Kiski Area (2-0, 1-0) to a Northern Conference victory. Colecchi scored on a 4-yard run and caught TD passes of 55 and 42 yards. Cavaliers quarterback Ryne Wallace passed for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Darin Mizgorski had 251 yards passing and one touchdown for Shaler (1-1, 0-1), and Brennan Fugh made 10 receptions for 204 yards and a score.

North Hills 42, Fox Chapel 24 — In the Northern Conference, Tyler Brennan ran for 270 yards and five touchdowns to lead North Hills (2-0, 1-0) to victory at Fox Chapel (0-2, 0-1). Shane Susnak completed 20 of 27 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Class 4A

Thomas Jefferson 62, Ringgold 0 —Top-ranked Thomas Jefferson (1-0, 1-0) held Ringgold (0-2, 0-1) to just 26 total yards, including minus-53 yards rushing, in its Big 8 Conference win. Jack Konick scored two defensive touchdowns on fumble recoveries for Thomas Jefferson while catching a 9-yard pass from Jake Pugh for another score. Max Shaw ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries.

West Mifflin 35, Indiana 0 — Parrish Parker ran for 245 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 5 West Mifflin (1-1, 1-0) to the Big 8 Conference shutout at Indiana (0-2, 0-1). Matthew Schuster threw for 123 yards — 112 to Bryant Johnson — in the win.

Blackhawk 48, Knoch 12 — Kenneth Gawley ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns while Marque Watson-Trent added 103 rushing yards and a TD as Blackhawk (2-0, 1-0) downed Knoch (0-2, 0-1) in the Northwest 8 Conference. Blackhawk gained 405 total yards, including 339 on the ground.

New Castle 17, Montour 11 — Trenton Kimbrough returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown as New Castle (1-1, 1-0) beat Montour (0-2, 0-1) in the Northwest 8 Conference. Luke Persinger threw for 138 yards and a touchdown for Montour.

South Fayette 35, Beaver 7 — Jamie Diven completed 11 of 14 passes for 177 yards and all five of No. 3 South Fayette’s touchdowns in its Northwest 8 Conference victory against No. 4 Beaver (1-1, 0-1). South Fayette (1-1, 1-0) outgained Beaver, 345 to 178 yards, while possessing the ball for nearly twice as long.

Class 3A

Elizabeth Forward 33, Deer Lakes 14 — Zach Benedek ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Elizabeth Forward (1-0, 1-0) won a Big East Conference game.

North Catholic 41, Burrell 7 — The Class 3A No. 2 Trojans (2-0, 1-0) rolled to the win in the Big East Conference opener behind Zach Rocco, who threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns. Tyree Brown caught three passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Seth Fischbach caught six passes for 40 yards and a touchdown for the Bucs (0-2, 0-1).

Aliquippa 55, Waynesburg 0 — M.J. Devonshire scored on punt returns of 64, 51 and 62 yards and on a run of 28 yards as top-ranked Aliquippa (2-0, 1-0) blanked Waynesburg (1-1, 0-1) in the Tri-County West. Aliquippa led at halftime 42-0.

Beaver Falls 48, South Park 31 — Amen Cottrill scored on a 7-yard run and an 80-yard kickoff return as Beaver Falls (2-0, 1-0) beat South Park (0-1, 0-1) in the Tri-County West. Brice Anderson caught two touchdown passes, and Kyzer Cleckley scored on a 65-yard fumble return in the win. Rudy Mihoces ran for 127 yards and three touchdowns for South Park.

Quaker Valley 18, Central Valley 0 —Defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Quaker Valley (1-0, 1-0) kicked off Tri-County West play with a shutout win. Ethan Moore threw for 183 yards and a score for the Quakers.

Class 2A

Avonworth 33, Valley 12 Avonworth (2-0, 1-0) senior quarterback Derek Johncour passed for 252 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Antelopes past Valley (1-1, 0-1) in an Allegheny Conference matchup at Valley Memorial Stadium.

Johncour connected with senior wide receiver Turner Grau for touchdown passes of 25 and 15 yards; Grau finished with 123 yards on eight receptions. Deonte Ross led the Vikings with a 100-yards rushing on 24 carries and scored on a 48-yard interception return.

Steel Valley 41, East Allegheny 12 —Todd Hill rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns on only six carries as No. 3 Steel Valley (1-0, 1-0) beat East Allegheny 0-2, 0-1) in the Allegheny Conference. Todd Hill added 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Freedom 63, Shenango 0 —Jake Pail rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns as Freedom (2-0, 1-0) scored 35 points in the first quarter on way to shutting out Shenango (0-2, 0-1) in a Midwestern Conference matchup to capture the program’s 400th victory. Freedom’s defense intercepted five passes, including Zach Rosa returning one 41 yards for a touchdown. Nick DiNardo converted all nine of his extra point attempts.

Mohawk 45, New Brighton 0 —Nicholas Wheeler threw for 194 yards and two scores, both to Jordan Mollenkopf, as Mohawk (2-0, 1-0) won in the MAC.

Riverside 45, Neshannock 14 —Ben Hughes threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 2 Riverside (1-0, 1-0) to the win against Neshannock (0-2, 0-1) in the Midwestern Conference. Riverside scored 31 points in the second quarter.

Burgettstown 20, Seton LaSalle 6 —Jake Lounder returned an interception nine yards for one touchdown and ran for another score as Burgettstown (1-0, 1-0) defeated Seton LaSalle (0-2, 0-1) in the Three Rivers Conference. Lounder ran for 100 yards. Max Schipani threw for 125 yards and a touchdown for Seton LaSalle, which led 6-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fort Cherry 20, Carlynton 14 (2OT) —Zachary Vincenti’s second touchdown of overtime lifted Fort Cherry (2-0, 1-0) to the Three Rivers Conference win against Carlynton (1-1, 0-1). Will Richardson ran for 122 yards and a 43-yard touchdown and caught a 9-yard pass from Greiner Maclaine for Carlynton’s overtime touchdown.

South Allegheny 34, Brentwood 13 —Antonio Epps ran 21 times for 144 yards and three touchdowns in South Allegheny’s Three Rivers Conference win at Brentwood (1-1, 0-1). Elijah Webb added a touchdown on a 50-yard punt return for South Allegheny (2-0, 1-0).

Class A

Cornell 24, Union 0 —Zaier Harrison threw for 146 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 108 yards as Cornell (1-0, 1-0) shut out Union (1-1, 0-1) in the Big Seven Conference. Luke Piccolo caught two touchdown passes and ran for another score.

OLSH 46, Sto-Rox 6 —Tyler Bradley threw for four touchdown passes as OLSH (2-0, 1-0) defeated Sto-Rox (0-2, 0-1) in a Big Seven Conference clash. Andrew Schnarre caught 11 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Ricco Tate had two receiving touchdowns for the Chargers, as well. Austin Wigley had 101 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and also intercepted two passes on defense.

Rochester 26, Laurel 14 —Darius Goosby ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns and teammate Noah Whiteleather rushed for 109 yards and caught a 95-yard scoring pass from Zane Jeffers as Rochester (2-0, 1-0) beat Laurel (0-2, 0-1) in the Big Seven Conference. Luke McCoy scored on runs of 16 and 32 yards for Laurel’s touchdowns.

Chartiers-Houston 43, Jefferspn-Morgan 12 —Six different players scored touchdowns for Chartiers-Houston (1-1, 1-0) in its Tri-County South win at Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 0-1). Jake Broadwater threw for one touchdown and ran for another for Jefferson-Morgan.

Baldwin 58, Butler 13 —Jarren Kelly scored on a 93-yard kick return, a 40-yard scoring pass from Mason Stahl and a 36-yard interception return as Class 5A Baldwin (2-0) beat Class 6A Butler (0-2). Tyler Gurchak and C.J. Robbins also returned interceptions for touchdowns for Baldwin.

Keystone Oaks 49, Highlands 42 —Michael Daure scored six times to lift Keystone Oaks (2-0) to a nonconference victory. The teams combined for 1,079 yards.

Laurel Highlands 39, Albert Gallatin 13 —Conner Basinger threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 112 yards and three TDs to lead Class 4A Laurel Highlands (1-1) to victory at Class 5A Albert Gallatin (0-2). Braeden Moody threw for one touchdown and ran for another for Albert Gallatin.

Mars 23, Moon 13 —Garrett Reinke ran for 216 yards and a touchdown as Mars (2-0) beat Moon (1-1) in nonconference play. Brady Sunday rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown for Moon.

Serra Catholic 24, Ellwood City 14 —Patrick Brennan threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns to lead Serra Catholic (2-0) to a nonconference win at Ellwood City (0-2). Matt Ulishney caught six passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns for Serra Catholic. Ellwood City scored both of its touchdowns on fumble recoveries.

South Side Beaver 35, Western Beaver 15 — Jake Botkin ran 25 times for 220 yards and three touchdowns to lead South Side Beaver (2-0) to a nonconference win against Western Beaver (1-1).
