WPIAL team track championships in Monday’s 3 things to watch in high school sports

When the WPIAL team track championships start Monday afternoon, Butler, Hempfield, North Allegheny and Norwin will send both their boys and girls to compete in Class AAA.

Only four teams qualified for the finals in each classification, and those four swept the big-school spots with first-round wins.

The championship meet is 4 p.m. at Baldwin.

The Class AA contenders are more varied with only Mohawk qualifying in both boys and girls.

Beaver, defending champion Burrell, Mohawk and Shenango will contend for the girls title. The Class AA boys finalists are Freedom, Mohawk, defending champion Riverside and South Park.

Butler is the defending Class AAA girls champion. Seneca Valley won the Class AAA boys title in 2017.

Sorting out the baseball sections

The baseball playoff brackets will be drawn up later this week, but some section standings are still far from decided.

In Section 1-5A, North Hills (9-2 in section) and Hampton (9-2) are tied for first with Mars (8-3) only one game behind them.

Mars visits Hampton at 3:45 p.m. Monday for the section finale. Hampton defeated Mars, 6-5, on April 21, but each team has hopes for at least a share of the section title with a win.

North Hills visits fourth-place Fox Chapel (6-5) at 7 p.m. Monday.

In Section 1-3A, Burrell (7-2) visits Steel Valley (7-2) and the winner will share the section title with Valley (8-2). Steel Valley defeated Burrell, 5-1, in their April 13 matchup.

Boys tennis starts section doubles

The WPIAL boys tennis postseason is scheduled to continue Monday with section doubles tournaments. The five-round brackets are stretched over two days. The top four pairs from each section advance to the WPIAL doubles tournament Thursday and Friday.
