WPIAL team wrestling tournaments among 3 things to watch Wednesday in WPIAL athletics

Thirty-one wrestling teams enter Wednesday with a chance to win a WPIAL team title. By the end of the day, that number will be down to eight.

The first two rounds of the WPIAL Class AAA and AA team tournaments start Wednesday at eight sites across Western Pennsylvania. First-round matches are at 6 p.m. The quarterfinals start at 7:15 p.m.

The semifinals and finals are Saturday.

WPIAL Class AAA tournament

At Canon-McMillan, the host wrestles Upper St. Clair, and Peters Township faces Hampton. At Seneca Valley, the host faces Franklin Regional, and Hempfield faces West Allegheny. At Waynesburg, the host faces Armstrong, and Trinity faces Connellsville. At Kiski Area, the host faces Thomas Jefferson, and Greensburg Salem faces North Allegheny.

Kiski Area, the defending WPIAL champion, is led by two top-ranked wrestlers: Danny Starr (24-3) at 195 points and Isaac Reid (5-0) at 285.

Other top wrestlers in the Class AAA field are Canon-McMillan's Logan Macri (20-2) at 120 pounds, Franklin Regional's Colton Camacho (28-2) at 132, Waynesburg's Jackson Henson (26-3) at 139 and Kyle Homet (27-6) at 170, and Hempfield's Luke Kemerer (25-1) at 145.

WPIAL Class AA tournament

Host Burrell has a bye, and Mt. Pleasant wrestles Burgettstown. At McGuffey, the host faces South Side Beaver, and South Fayette faces Fort Cherry. At Derry, the host faces Keystone Oaks, and Elizabeth Forward faces Valley. At Freedom, the host faces Quaker Valley, and Beth-Center faces Beaver.

Burrell, the reigning WPIAL Class AA champion, has two top-ranked wrestlers: Trent Valovchik (16-6) at 106 pounds and Ian Oswalt (19-7) at 113.

Quaker Valley's John Rocco Kazalas (26-2) is ranked first among WPIAL Class AA wrestlers at 132 pounds, joining Derry's Onreey Stewart (27-5) at 138 and Dominic DeLuca (31-2) at 220, South Side Beaver's Joe Demor (22-1) at 145 and Bishop McCoy (20-1) at 285, Freedom's Michael Muron (19-4) at 160 and Bryson Miller (15-1) at 195, McGuffey's Christian Clutter (23-1) at 170 and Beth-Center's Dominic Fundy (20-2) at 182.

A light schedule but a strong matchup

It's an off night for most boys basketball teams, but Uniontown (11-6, 7-3) visits South Fayette (10-6, 7-3) for a key game in Class 4A. The two teams are tied for second in Section 3 behind Belle Vernon (14-4, 9-2).

Uniontown won 50-47 when the two teams met Jan. 17.
