High school roundup for May 7: North Hills baseball locks up Section 1-5A title

Steven Miller hit a line-drive single in the 10th inning that scored the game-winning run, propelling Class 5A No. 5 North Hills to a 5-4 victory over Fox Chapel that clinched the Section 1 title.

Miller finished with three hits and pitched four innings of scoreless relief with nine strikeouts to earn the win for the Indians (14-3, 10-2).

Dante DeBaldo had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Fox Chapel (7-9, 6-6)..

Mars 6, Hampton 0 — Wil Bednar threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Mars (11-5, 9-3) won in Section 1-5A.

Trinity 3, Montour 0 — Kyle Steele hit two doubles, and Zach Johnston hit a two-run homer as Trinity (5-8, 5-7) won in Section 2-5A.

Greensburg Salem 5, Indiana 0 — Andrew Rosenberg threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts, and Jonathan Borbonus was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs as Greensburg Salem (11-5, 10-4) won in Section 1-4A.

Dajauhn Hertzog was 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Golden Lions.

South Park 10, McGuffey 0 (5 inn.) — Mike Kentzel homered twice to help South Park (14-6, 9-5) win a Section 3-4A game. Kevin Vaupel threw a three-hitter with five strikeouts to earn the win.

Burrell 3, Steel Valley 1 — Nick Hwostow's two-run triple in a three-run fifth lifted No. 4 Burrell (9-2, 8-2) to a victory over No. 3 Steel Valley and a share of the Section 1-3A title. Zach Miller added an RBI single, and Luke Virag pitched 6 23 strong innings for the Bucs. Brady Miller singled in a run for Steel Valley (8-6, 7-3), while Nick Harhai gave up just four hits in seven innings of work.

Beaver Falls 11, New Brighton 2 — Emilio Allegra was 3 for 4 with a double for Beaver Falls (6-8, 5-7) in a Section 2-3A win.

Chartiers-Houston 2, Beth-Center 0 — Dustin Weiser homered, and Zach Southern earned the win as Chartiers-Houston (11-7, 10-4) won in Section 1-2A.

Bishop Canevin 9, Riverview 7Riverview led 3-0 after three innings, but five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth were enough to push Bishop Canevin (7-6, 7-6) to a Section 3-2A win. Mark McClelland had three hits, including a double, for the Raiders (4-9, 3-9), and Ben Blacksmith doubled.

Monessen 5, Jeannette 0 — Tote Rhome was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and winning pitcher Cory Fleming doubled as Monessen upset No. 2 Jeannette in a Section 2-A game.

The Greyhounds (10-5, 9-3) lost 10-0 to Jeannette on April 9. Seth Howard took the loss and doubled for Jeannette (11-2, 9-2).

Ambridge 8, Seton LaSalle 5 — Ben Oslick had three RBIs to help Ambridge (1-13) win a nonsection game.

Avonworth 5, Vincentian Academy 2 — Jack Reed was 2 for 3, and Ryan Felter threw a five-hitter as Class 3A No. 5 Avonworth (13-4) won a nonsection game. Aidan Thomson had an RBI for Class A No. 1 Vincentian (12-3).

Connellsville 11, Albert Gallatin 1 (6 inn.) — Cade Warrick was 3 for 4 with three doubles and four RBIs as Connellsville (3-12) won a nonsection game.

Hempfield 7, Chartiers Valley 6 — Isaiah DiAndreth had two hits and two RBIs, and Nick DiAndreth doubled as Class 6A No. 3 Hempfield (14-5) won a nonsection game. Tyler Dancu allowed four hits and struck out six in four innings to earn the win.

Latrobe 5, Ligonier Valley 4 — Isaac Echard had a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to help Latrobe (9-8) earn a nonsection victory. Jacob Bradish earned the win.

Ethan Boring had an RBI for the Rams.

Laurel Highlands 8, Belle Vernon 1 — Mason McManus was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Laurel Highlands (14-1) won a nonsection game over Belle Vernon (11-5).

OLSH 11, Eden Christian Academy 2 — Peter Fabiano was 4 for 4 and Nathan Hart was 3 for 4 as OLSH (10-8) won a nonsection game.

Penn-Trafford 3, Gateway 0 — Josh Spiegel hit an RBI double, and Ben Mongelluzzo had two hits as Penn-Trafford (10-5) won a nonsection game. Tyler Horvat allowed two hits and had five strikeouts in four innings to earn the win.

Pine-Richland 10, Knoch 4 — Matt Wood was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs as Class 6A No. 4 Pine-Richland (11-5) won a nonsection game.

Plum 5, Seneca Valley 2 — Ryan Kircher struck out 13 and did not allow a hit over 5 23 innings to lead Plum (13-4) to a nonsection win over Seneca Valley (9-9). Kircher, who walked five, was pulled because of pitch count rules. Jackson Rogers had three hits and an RBI for the Mustangs, and Tanner Froehlich singled in a pair of runs.

Softball

New Castle 17, Central Valley 1 (4 inn.) — Makayla Stoner was 2 for 4 with two home runs and seven RBIs as New Castle (7-6, 7-4) won in Section 3-4A.

Keystone Oaks 7, West Mifflin 3 — In Section 2-4A, Alexis Butler and Bri Butler each had two RBIs to give Keystone Oaks (7-8, 4-7) a victory.

Beaver 5, Quaker Valley 0 — Deyvnn Tritsch was 3 for 3 with a double as Beaver (10-1, 10-1) won in Section 3-4A.

Apollo-Ridge 11, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 (5 inn.) — Teresa Desimone doubled and drove in three runs to help Apollo-Ridge (6-5, 6-4) win a Section 2-2A game over Greensburg Central Catholic (1-9, 1-9). Sierra Blair tripled and Mollie Charlton doubled for the Vikings. Morgan Shupe pitched three innings and struck out five to earn the win.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 13, Apollo-Ridge 4 — Sierra Blair homered, but Apollo-Ridge dropped a Section 2-2A game to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (11-3, 9-0).

St. Joseph 17-10, Geibel 0-0 — The Spartans kept their hopes of sharing the Section 3-A crown with Leechburg alive with a doubleheader sweep. St. Joseph (10-2, 9-2) hosts No. 4 Leechburg (11-3, 10-1) at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at No Offseason Sports Complex in Tarentum. In Game 1, Anna Swierczewski hit an inside-the-park homer and doubled. Ava Swanson and Courtney Fogle doubled for the Spartans, and Shelby Gogal limited Geibel (2-8, 2-7) to one hit over three innings with four striketouts. In Game 2, Swierczewski pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and struck out six. Serena Edgar and Swanson singled twice.

Belle Vernon 2, West Greene 1 — Bailey Parshall threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts, and Mekenzie Sokol had an RBI as Class 4A No. 3 Belle Vernon (16-2) won a nonsection game.

Losing pitcher Jade Renner had two hits, and Lexie Mooney had an RBI for Class A No. 2 West Greene (14-4).

Burrell 5, Plum 4 (8 inn.) — Rikki Wyble hit a walk-off single that scored Lea Coffman with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Burrell (10-4) to a nonsection win over Plum (8-8). Wyble finished with a pair of singles. Lea Coffman hit a two-run homer for Burrell. Gabrielle Fischetti had a three-run home run in the first inning for the Mustangs. Abbey Froehlich and MacKenzie Lake singled twice.

Chartiers-Houston 1, Monessen 0 — Kaci Alderson homered in the first inning to lead Class 2A No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (13-2) to a nonsection win over Class A No. 1 Monessen (11-2). Kaitlyn Dittrich threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts in the win.

Dana Vatakis allowed six hits and had 10 strikeouts for the Greyhounds.

Connellsville 10, Norwin 1 — Abbi King and Josey Moorhead knocked in two runs each to help Class 5A No. 5 Connellsville (11-5) win a nonsection game. Sara Russell had a triple for the Class 6A Knights (9-5).

Hopewell 11, New Brighton 9 — Kacey Weller, Riley Lewis and Morgan Platko all had extra-base hits for Hopewell (3-9) in a nonsection game. Kylee Rusak was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for New Brighton (1-15).

Indiana 8, Butler 1 — Madison Barker was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Sara Zimmerman had three hits as Indiana (10-5) won a nonsection game. Winning pitcher Lauren Bertig had a two-run double.

McDowell 6, Hempfield 1 — Laura Fox was 3 for 4 with a double for Hempfield, but the Class 6A No. 2 Spartans (14-3) fell to McDowell in a nonsection game.

Penn-Trafford 2, Latrobe 0 — Emma Little and Carlee Lamacz knocked in runs in the second inning to give Class 5A No. 2 Penn-Trafford (14-3) a nonsection victory over Class 6A No. 1 Latrobe. Samantha Schickel threw a three-hitter with two strikeouts to earn the win. Kiley Myers allowed four hits and had seven strikeouts for the Wildcats (10-3).

South Park 15, Canon-McMillan 3 — Kaitlyn Pavlick homered and had three RBIs, and Kaitlin Morrison, Jess Dean and Taylor Glowa also had three RBIs as Class 3A No. 1 South Park (12-1) won a nonsection game.

Ligonier Valley 8, Southmoreland 4 — Lindsey Stormer was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs to guide Ligonier Valley (13-3) to a nonsection win. Lexie Petrof added two doubles. Courtney Myers had a two-run double for Southmoreland (7-5).
