Veteran Peters Township baseball coach Joe Maize won his 400th game Wednesday afternoon as the Indians defeated Steel Valley, 11-4, in a nonsection matchup at West Field in Munhall.

He put 399 in the books Monday as Peters Township opened its season with a 6-2 triumph at Chartiers Valley.

Maize's teams have produced eight section championships, two WPIAL titles — back-to-back Class 4A crowns in 2007 and 2008 — and a pair of PIAA runner-up finishes (2004 and 2005).

He now is 400-225 in his 34th season at the helm of the Indians. He has led the team to at least 15 wins in a season nine times.

The 2005 and 2007 squads each produced a school-record 21 victories.

Peters Township, now 2-0 on the young season, will attempt to get Maize his 401st victory when it opens Section 3-6A action April 7 at home against Allderdice.
