Westmoreland high school roundup: Appolonia nets overtime winner for Yough

Justine Appolonia found the back of the net in double overtime to give No. 4 Yough a 1-0 victory over Southmoreland (2-6, 2-4) in a Section 3-AA girls soccer game Monday night.

Emily McClaren had the assist, and Sara Krofcheck posted the shutout for the Cougars (8-1, 5-1), who kept pace with section-leading Waynesburg (9-1, 6-0).

Hempfield 7, Latrobe 3 — Maelayne Morrow and Caroline Czarnecki each scored twice to lift Hempfield (2-7, 1-4) to a Section 4-AAAA win, snapping a two-game skid. Sierra Aniballi, Sabri Pettinato and Ashleigh Van Horn also scored for the Spartans.

Madison Shafron, Hannah Zimmerman and Maddie DeIuzio scored for Latrobe (1-6, 0-5).

Franklin Regional 2, Gateway 0 — In Section 1-AAA, Alison Sopko and Abby Albright scored to lift No. 5 Franklin Regional (6-2, 4-1) to victory. Sydney Caldwell posted the shutout, the Panthers' fifth of the season.

Greensburg Salem 2, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Nikki Mellenger scored on a penalty kick, and Riley Stoner scored off of an assist from Sydney Gaytons as Greensburg Salem (2-7, 2-4) tallied a Section 2-AAA victory over the Vikings (5-5, 4-2). Kendra Kennedy notched the shutout.

Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Jeannette 0 — Brenna Springer and Chelsey Boyle scored twice each, and Bella Skatell had three assists as No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (6-1, 6-0) won a Section 1-A game against Jeannette (1-6, 0-5) at Hempfield Park. Sam Felder, Alexa Schwerha, Sara Orndoff, Sydney Ward, Isabelle Pellis and Ashley McWilliams also scored. Skatell and Schwerha combined for the shutout.

Monessen 4, Geibel 4 — In Section 2-A, Monessen moved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in section play with a draw at Geibel (0-7-1, 0-5-1).

Boys soccer

South Allegheny 6, Jeannette 1South Allegheny moved to 3-5 overall with a nonsection win at Jeannette (0-8-1).

Boys golf

Hempfield 200, Norwin 213 — Anthony Belotti had a 36 to guide Hempfield (9-4, 6-4) to a Section 1-AAAA win. Jason Miller shot 39 for Norwin (5-6, 4-6).

Girls golf

Franklin Regional 195, Oakland Catholic 207 — Jocelyn Behr shot 38 to pace Franklin Regional in a Section 3-AAA victory.

Greensburg Central Catholic 175, Ligonier Valley 218 — Abby Zambruno shot 37 to lead Greensburg Central Catholic to a nonsection win.

Ligonier Valley 218, Southmoreland 219 — Sara Klinchock shot 46 to lead Ligonier Valley to a nonsection win. Olivia Ledbetter shot 49 for Southmoreland.

Girls tennis

Derry 5, Jeannette 0 — In a nonsection match at Greensburg Racquet Club, Juliet Tatone, Ekaterina Trimble and Leah Perry all won singles matches in straight sets to lift Derry (7-4) to victory.
