The WPIAL Board of Control has approved changes in the football alignment for next season forced by the merger of Kittanning and Ford City High Schools to form Armstrong High School starting in the fall of 2015.
Armstrong High School will be a AAA school and has been placed in the Greater Allegheny Conference with Franklin Regional, Gateway, Greensburg-Salem, Hampton, Hollidaysburg, Indiana, Knoch and Mars.
Yough moves from the Greater Allegheny Conference to the Big Nine Conference (soon to be Big Ten?) with Albert Gallatin, Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward, Laurel Highlands, Ringgold, Thomas Jefferson, Trinity, Uniontown and West Mifflin.
With Kittanning and Ford City gone from the Class AA Allegheny Conference, Summit Academy moves back to the Allegheny to join Apollo-Ridge, Burrell, Deer Lakes, Freeport, Highlands, Shady Side Academy, Valley and West Shamokin.
To keep all four conference with nine teams, Quaker Valley is moving from the Century Conference to the Midwestern Athletic Conference where they join, Aliquippa, Beaver, Beaver Falls, Ellwood City, Freedom, Laurel, Mohawk and New Brighton.
The moves leave 28 teams in AAA and 34 in AA. However with 25 teams in AAAA, scheduling is going to be an issue with one district team having to play an out of district team each week.
