After winning nine state championships a year ago in AAA, eight of which by seniors, a setback could have been expected. But when you are in a district as strong as the WPIAL, it never seems to happen. The WPIAL had another good showing at Hershey to cap its season, as five wrestlers came away with state gold.
A pair of wrestlers were able to win their third PIAA Championship. The first was Franklin Regional’s Spencer Lee at 120 pounds. Lee, who pinned his first three opponents in the tournament in the first period, was able to rack up multiple back points on his way to a 15-0 technical fall in 3:42 to defeat Austin DeSanto of Exeter Township. For his efforts, Lee was the recipient of the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award and the Most Falls Award for the PIAA tournament.
The other wrestler to win his third title was Latrobe’s Luke Pletcher at 138 pounds. Pletcher was able to pick up a takedown late in the first period that made the difference in a 3-1 win over Evan Fidelibus of Easton. Meanwhile, winning his second PIAA Championship was Penn Trafford’s Cameron Coy at 145 pounds. Coy opened up the match with two quick takedowns to take an early lead, which helped pave the way to a 9-1 major decision win over Brock Wilson of Nazareth.
Two other WPIAL wrestlers were also able to leave Hershey with a gold medal on Saturday. The first was North Allegheny’s Jake Woodley at 182 pounds. He defeated a familiar for to win a state title, as he beat Milton Kobaly of Belle Vernon for a fifth time this season. Woodley capitalized on a five point move in the first period to cruise to an 8-4 win. The other was Jacob Robb of Armstrong at 220 pounds. Robb would have a rematch with Michael McAleavey of Peters Township in the finals, and for Robb the result was similar as he won by fall, this time in 2:22.
The WPIAL did end up falling short in a few finals matches Saturday. Louis Newell of Seneca Valley dropped a 9-3 decision to Tyson Klump of Nazareth. He went down 5-0 early, and the lead proved to be too much to overcome. At 170 pounds, Nino Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park was taken down three times by Michael Labriola of Bethlehem Catholic, which resulted in a 6-4 loss. At 195 pounds, Drew Phipps of Norwin gave up an escape in the second period, and was unable to escape in the third, which led to a 1-0 win for Jake Jakobsen of Stroudsburg.
