Wrestling action opened in Hershey for the AA wrestling state championships, but it was not a strong day for the WPIAL. With 35 wrestlers in action to start the day, the WPIAL was only able to advance 14 wrestlers into tomorrow’s quarterfinals. Out of the remaining 21, only 10 stayed alive in the consolations after day one.
While the top wrestlers for the WPIAL did not disappoint, a couple individuals surprised on Thursday. At 138 pounds, Dallas Bulsak of South Park was able to win a pair of matches, including a victory over Northwest champion Jarrette Carter of Fort LeBoeuf by a 4-3 score. Bulsak will wrestle Southeast runner up Chase Anklam of Pen Argyl in the quarterfinals.
Another WPIAL wrestler to knock off a region champion was GioVonne Sanders of Jeannette at 152 pounds. After winning his first bout, Sanders was able to hand Northeast champion Zach Fry of Hughesville his first loss of the season with a 3-2 decision. Sanders will wrestle Northwest runner up Caleb Hetrick of Brookville in the quarterfinals.
The third WPIAL wrestler to do well in the winners bracket was Rasaun Culberson of South Fayette at 220 pounds. After winning his first match by technical fall, Culberson beat Northwest champion Gage Gladysz of Greenville to give him his first loss of the season. He was able to do it with a 6-4 victory to move into the quarterfinals, where he will wrestle Southeast runner up Joseph Gladish of Allentown CC.
One WPIAL wrestler who was upset was Josh Lind of Mount Pleasant at 285 pounds. Lind came into the tournament as a strong state finalist contender but fell short in the opening round, dropping an 11-4 decision to Zach Stafford of Cambridge Springs. Lind still remains alive in the consolations.
Wrestling gets back under way Friday morning at 9:00 AM, with the quarterfinals and second round consolations. The AA semi finals will take place Friday night at 7:30 PM. You can listen to every match here on the MSA Sports Network.
