Wild and wacky would be one way to describe the WPIAL Boys and Girls AA swimming championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh. Going into the second day the Shady Side Academy Girls led by 32 points over Derry. Their lead grew after each event and eventually they would win by 109 points. Derry could not hold onto 2nd place as Blackhawk overtook them during the last event to finish second.
On the Boys side it was close all day. In an unusual day there were two lead changes for the lead, three for second place, and two for third in a wild team event. Quaker Valley came into the day down 17 points, and in 3rd place. The Quakers went ahead after the first event, then after the 3rd event fell to second before taking the lead for good after the 4th event and holding onto win by 23 points over the West Allegheny Indians. West A briefly held the lead by six points after event three but could not hold on. Laurel Highlands who led by 6 points coming into the day fell to second after one event then third after the third and remained there all day to finish third.
In talking about individuals who did well on the day it was again an interesting interesting set of circumstances. On the Girls side all five events saw repeat winners, led by Emily Zimcosky of Geibel who won her 4th straight 100 Yard Freestyle event and set a new WPIAL record. Bailey Bonnet who won a medal on Thursday in the 200 Yard IM, won her third straight title in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Sabrina Bowman won her 2nd straight in the 100 Yard Backstroke, and Brooke Zukowski won her third straight in the 100 Yard Breaststroke. Shady Side Academy won their 2nd straight in the 400 Yard Freestyle relay.
On the Boys side of the event there were two new champions who unseated Lat years champions. One new champion and two repeat winners. Matthew Kwalick of Quaker Valley won the 100 Yard Freestyle defeating defending champ Mat Ramsey of Hampton.Kyle Hrabovsky of Quaker Valley won the 100 Yard Backstroke taking down defending champ John WIlson of Knoch. Repeat winners were Logan Palochack who defended his 100 Yard Backstoke tittle, and Quaker Valley who won a second straight 400 Yard Freestyle Relay event. The only new champion on Friday was EJ Eppinger from Winchester Thurston who won the Boys 500 Yard Freestyle.
