Day 1 in the AAA Girls and Boys Swimming Championships were much of the same old, same old. Once again, the North Allegheny Tigers boys and girls have jumped out to healthy leads after the first day of activity at Joseph Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh. Although, in surprising fashion, neither Tigers swim teams were able to capture gold in the opening team event, the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Those gold medals went to the Upper St. Clair girls (Maeve Lersch, Maddie Yoos, Ynrya Bohan and Lindsey Choate) and Upper St. Clair boys (Jack Fitzpatrick, Kevin Liu, Braedon Wong & Brandon Novak) and in the most stunning revelation, the North Allegheny boys didn’t even medal in the event, finishing fourth.
On the girls side, in a mild upset, Abby Metheny of Upper St. Clair won gold in the 200 Yd. Freestyle beating out last year’s gold medalist Lauren McGrath. Peters Township freshman, Abby Hay, won gold in the 200 Yd. IM, leading wire to wire and Mt. Lebanon’s Angie Gyurina won gold in the 50 Yd Freestyle. Gyurina finished fourth in the same event last year. Blue Devil frosh, Trinity Ward, blew away the field in winning gold in the 100 Yd Butterfly, beating the field by over two seconds. Mt. Lebanon’s quartet of Alison Shapiro, Hannah Bumgarner, Emma Buerger and Angie Gyurina took home team gold in the 200 Yd Freestyle Relay
North Allegheny’s boys turned their initial disappointing 4th place finish in the 200 Yd Medley Relay into big points as they swept the medals in the 200 Yd. Freestyle and also got 5th place points as well. Last year’s silver medalist in the event, Mason Gonzalez, swam to gold in the event and Eben Krigger, who finished with a bronze medal in 2015, won silver for the Tigers. Mt. Lebanon’s Brian Ramsey won a gold medal in the Boys 200 Yd IM while teammate, Jack Rice, won gold in the 50 Yd Freestyle. Upper St. Clair’s Braedon Wong swam to a gold medal in the 100 Yd Butterfly. The North Allegheny foursome of Mason Gonzalez, Maxwell Gonzalez, Jack Wright and Eben Krieger would avenge the earlier team disappointment by winning the 200 Yd Freestyle Relay.

The Shady Side Academy Indians got off to a great start in their defense of their 2015 WPIAL crown by dusting the field in the very first event at Trees Pool on Thursday afternoon. The foursome of Caroline Colville, Heather Grune, Lindsey Grune and Ashley Azzarello won the 200 Yd Medley relay, beating the rest of the field by nearly two full seconds. Quaker Valley’s junior Maddy Andrews won gold in the 200 Yd Freestyle, blowing away everyone in the final heat. Highlands’ Bailey Bonnett was the first swimmer all day to record a WPIAL record and the only individual swimmer to do so on Day 1. Bonnett won gold in the 200 Yd IM by posting a time of 2:00.57. The previous WPIAL record was set back in 2010 by Rachel Zilinskas of Indiana. The biggest surprise of the day was Taylor Petrak (Ellwood City) beating last year’s gold medalist, Emily Zimcosky (Geibel Catholic) in the 50 Yd Freestyle. Zimcosky won gold in 2015 in swimming to a WPIAL record time of 23.10 seconds. Zimcosky would win silver this year behind Petrak, who overtook Zimcosky in the final 25 yards of the race. For the second time in as many years, St. Joseph’s Sabrina Bowman won gold in the 100 Yd Butterfly. Riverside’s Alana Nulph, Meghan Rosendale, Kelly Krechowski and Erica King would team up to win gold in the final team event of the day, the 200 Yd Freestyle Relay.
On the boys side, West Allegheny started the day flying high as Michael Kocher, Derek Currey, Jeremy Ellis and Gary McMurtrie would combine to take home team gold in the 200 Yd Medley Relay but their initial lead would soon fade. Kevin Kondrit of Springdale would take the gold in the first individual boys event, the 200 Yd Freestyle while Quakers’ Matthew Kwalick would win gold in the 200 Yd IM. Hampton’s Matt Ramsey went from a silver in 2015 to gold in 2016 with a close win in the 50 Yd Freestyle, outlasting Uniontown’s Jonathan Sharp by two-tenths of a second. Obama’s Sean Niksic took home gold in the 100 Yd Butterfly. QV’s Kwalick, Harry Harkins, Even Ragoowansi and Kyle Hrabovsky won team gold by swimming to victory in the 200 Yd Freestyle Relay. While no Laurel Highlands swimmers won individual gold, nor did they win a team event, the Mustangs got consistent points in nearly every event to take the team lead after the first day of swimming action.
