Editor’s note: Each day through Aug. 3, Trib HSSN will profile one member of the 2025 Trib 25 preseason high school football all-star team.
Fort Cherry quarterback and safety Matt Sieg has rushed for 6,176 yards and passed for 4,177 yards in his career and, last fall, joined former Jeannette great Terrelle Pryor as the only players in WPIAL history to rush and pass for more than 4,000 yards in a career.
And he still has one more season left.
The sky is the limit for the Penn State commit who has led the Rangers to back-to-back WPIAL championships.
“I think putting any expectation on this upcoming season would be unfair to what he’s already accomplished,” Fort Cherry coach Tanner Garry said. “That doesn’t mean he’s going to take his foot off the pedal. He’s just not that type of kid. But there comes a point as a coach where you just have to appreciate what he’s been able to do for your program.
“I’m just excited to see what his senior year brings.”
There is a lot asked on both sides of the ball of the 6-foot, 180-pound senior, but he is prepared to carry his share of the load for the Rangers.
“Personally, I’ve been really focused on taking care of my body and also lifting,” Sieg said. “I feel like I’ve gotten a lot stronger, and I think just taking the time to make sure my body is right is big.”
Though it was successful with 3,189 total yards from scrimmage, the 2024 season was challenging for Sieg as he played through a broken thumb suffered early in the year.
“During Matt’s junior season, we saw a jump in his game mentally,” Garry said. “As a three-year starter, the game really slows down, and he was able to process more information and responsibility. We also saw a huge physical jump in just being bigger and more mature. He was able to withstand a heavy workload and help lead us to a second championship.”
His offensive numbers have been historic, but Sieg will be on the other side of the ball in college. He will play safety at Penn State.
“I’ve definitely been working on my defensive footwork and technique a lot more, but everything else has been the same,” Sieg said about his summer workouts. “My defensive footwork has improved a lot, and I feel 10 times more comfortable coming out of breaks and making plays on the ball.”
In Sieg’s first three years at Fort Cherry, the Rangers are a combined 37-6. They are 29-2 over the last two seasons with back-to-back WPIAL championships.
In the 2024 Class A district championship thriller, Sieg rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 161 yards and connected on a 13-yard desperation touchdown pass to Ryan Huey on a fourth down late in the game that helped Fort Cherry defeat Clairton in an instant classic, 21-20.
The Rangers lost to Port Allegany in the PIAA Class A semifinals, a year after finishing as state runners-up.
“The guys and I have been working hard all summer to make another run,” Sieg said. “We need to just stay locked in and not be complacent. We need to come week-in and week-out ready to go and learn from the mistakes that we’re going to end up making. Being able to bounce back and make plays is going to be huge for us.
“My teammates and I want to get that first state title for our school and community.”
