“Route Runner.”
That is the title Samir Crosby displays next to his name on his X handle, in all capital letters, a self-imposed moniker he pulled in back shoulder for all to see.
“That’s what I am,” Crosby said. “That’s what I do.”
The Greensburg Central Catholic rising senior hopes to play wide receiver in college — he has 10 Division I offers — and his pass-catching skills could be featured more in his final high school season.
Expect the football to be in his hands — a lot — as GCC aims for a playoff run that goes beyond the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals.
“I will be doing a little of everything,” Crosby said. “I might switch back (to receiver). I feel like last year toward the playoffs, teams were able to focus on me more at quarterback. When I go to some camps for defense and offense, I feel like I always show that I am better as a wide receiver.”
Crosby has been an electric performer for the Centurions throughout his career, making defenders miss and extending plays that had no business going past the line of scrimmage.
Last year, he accounted for 2,541 yards and 38 touchdowns, passing and rushing for more than 1,000 yards. He did not have a reception after making 62 grabs his first two seasons.
A multi-time all-conference receiver and safety, Crosby tends to make what Steelers coach Mike Tomlin refers to as splash plays. Give him a block, and he’ll find daylight. Give him two blocks, and he’s moving the sticks.
Get him in space, and he’s probably gone.
“You hear people say he’s not tall enough … whatever,” GCC coach JT Thompson said. “God has given Samir gifts that overcome what some coaches see. He is a gifted player.”
Crosby has his eye on a unique accomplishment — reaching 1,000 yards in three career categories.
“Getting over 1,000 receiving yards would be nice this year,” he said. “And 25 to 30 touchdowns. I am dynamic as a player.”
Crosby was an offensive MVP at the 2Tenths Camp this summer — as a wideout. He said he carried extra motivation that week.
“I had more drive that day,” he said. “My grandma (Diane Guet) had just passed. She always wanted to watch me play and commit. This season is for her.”
While he has visited a number of schools and attended several camps, Crosby appears to be close to making a college decision, something he wants to wrap up before the season.
Ivy League, Patriot League and Mid-American Conference teams are high on him, mainly as a wideout or slot receiver — just the way he likes it.
“I am looking to lock down a spot, then we’ll see what happens,” Crosby said.
