Armand Hill broke out in a big way for West Mifflin as a freshman two years ago.
Already a starter at defensive back, Hill got his shot at running back as an injury replacement, and he shined as the Titans finished runner-up in their conference and earned a spot in the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.
In a game against Hopewell, he tallied 495 yards and five touchdowns, and the single-game yardage total ranks second in WPIAL history.
A move up to Class 4A for West Mifflin didn’t slow the speedy, shifty back last fall. He rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 23 touchdowns as the Titans again were playoff qualifiers.
Now, the nationally rated running back enters his junior season with more to prove and accomplish, and he will do it with a Division I commitment under his belt.
“With me being new and seeing all the guys in the weight room and then out on the field doing speed and agility and installing things, the thing that jumps out to me the most is Armand’s impeccable work ethic,” first-year Titans coach B.J. Pugh said. “Armand just works hard. If he has to do something, he just goes out and does it as hard as he possibly can to get the most out of ever rep or the most out of a lift.
“That is a good model for all the guys around to see who are going to naturally look up to him. They know that, yeah, he’s one of the most talented guys. When they see him working his tail off like he does, it motivates them to want to do it as well. It’s been great to be able to establish that rapport and connection with him.”
Hill, who earned Greater Allegheny Conference all-star accolades in 2024, surpassed 3,000 career rushing yards in last year’s regular-season finale against Hampton. He totaled 241 yards and four touchdowns as the Titans won 70-12.
West Mifflin won its final three games of the regular season, but it was not able to overcome a preceding four-game losing skid and missed the playoffs. Pugh said the returning starters and those new to the lineup are focused on getting the team back to the postseason, and Hill is right there ready to lead the way.
“He wants to win, and he understands that it takes everybody being on the same page on and off the field to make it happen,” Pugh said.
Penn State offered Hill late in his freshman season. Pitt offered that December. When the calendar turned to 2024, West Virginia delivered Hill an offer.
More Division I offers, including Michigan, Maryland and Syracuse, came through last season. More than a dozen to think about.
The decision process came to a close in March when Hill verbally committed to WVU.
“Naturally, it takes a load off the shoulders to have a decision like that already made and he’s really excited,” Pugh said. “But in today’s world with all the opportunities to connect and still talk, I am sure as he continues to improve and open more eyes, there will be some more interest and attention come his way in the next year or so before he (finalizes a decision).
“I am just happy for him that the hard work and dedication he’s put in is paying off.”
