Player to watch: Brandon Murphy
The sophomore linebacker is the leading tackler on a defense that didn’t allow a point for more than two months — a streak of nine straight shutouts. Murphy has 104 tackles, including 14 tackles for a loss, plus three interceptions. He has more than a dozen college offers with the latest coming from the Indiana Hoosiers.

Notable: Clairton’s 14 WPIAL titles are the second-most in league history behind only Aliquippa (21). Clairton was WPIAL runner-up last year, losing in the finals to Fort Cherry, 21-20. … The Bears outscored Eastern Conference foes 390-0 this year. The only regular season opponent to score against them was Imani Christian in Week Zero (a 19-12 loss for Clairton). … The Bears are seeking their fifth WPIAL title under 12th-year coach Wayne Wade. … The offense averages 47 points per game. The defense is allowing 5.6 ppg, even after giving up 55 combined in the past two weeks. … DE Tahvaz Armstrong leads the defense with seven sacks. .… RB Deon Pompey rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries last week. Player to watch: Kolton Carlson
Carlson’s ability to play running back or receiver adds another wrinkle to Laurel’s offense. The senior has scored five touchdowns and compiled more than 400 yards from scrimmage in the Spartans’ three playoff games. He reached the end zone twice in last week’s win over defending champion Fort Cherry.

Notable: This is the fourth time Laurel has reached the WPIAL finals. Two of the team’s three previous appearances also came against Clairton. Laurel defeated Clairton, 14-12, in 1980 and lost to the Bears, 27-20, in 1989. Both were Class A finals. … Laurel’s first WPIAL championship appearance was a 12-6 loss to South Allegheny in the 1977 Class 2A final. … The Spartans went undefeated in the Big 7 and outscored conference foes 254-22. Overall, the offense averaged 38.9 points this season and the defense allowed 9.4. … In the semifinals, WR/RB Kolton Carlson scored on a 2-yard run and caught a 30-yard touchdown from QB Luca Santini. … The Spartans rushed for six touchdowns in the quarterfinals, with two apiece scored by Carlson and Jack Miles. … Laurel’s lone loss this season was to Bishop Canevin, 46-28, on Sept. 13. … Brian Cooper is in his 12th season as Laurel’s coach after eight years at Shenango.
