3 WPIAL teams advance to semifinals of PIAA tennis tournament

Three WPIAL girls tennis teams are still in the hunt for a state championship.
Shady Side Academy in Class 3A and North Catholic and Quaker Valley in Class 2A advanced to Saturday’s semifinals at the Hershey Racquet Club with victories Friday.
WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy rolled past District 3 runner-up Wilson, 3-1. Cassie Lapina at No. 2 singles, Brooke Henderson at No. 3 singles and the second doubles team of Elena Rubinov and Elizabeth Butera won matches for the Bulldogs, who will face District 1 champ Lower Merion at 8 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals in a matchup of unbeaten teams.
In Class 2A, North Catholic, the WPIAL runner-up, defeated District 3 champ Lancaster Catholic.
Ava Conley and Leah Kernan won in three sets while Macaria Stall at No. 2 singles and Kaitlyn Abel and Claire Elliott at No. 2 doubles won in straight sets. North Catholic will face District 2 champ Scranton Prep in the semifinals at noon Saturday.
Quaker Valley got past District 3 runner-up Wyomissing, 3-2. Winners for the Quakers were Avery Allen at No. 1 singles and the doubles teams of Jane Lenhard with Kate Miller and Lily McClain with Lucy John. Quaker Valley will face Lower Moreland in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In Class 3A, Bethel Park lost 3-1 to District 1 runner-up Conestoga. Mackenzie Smock won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for the Black Hawks.
