5 WPIAL baseball teams to play for PIAA championships

Last year, WPIAL teams were shut out of the PIAA baseball gold rush.

District 7 had two teams win state crowns in each of the previous three years.

Buckle up, as five WPIAL teams — including four of district champions — are trying to capture gold this week at Penn State University for the state baseball finals.

WPIAL winners last month — Shaler in 5A, Indiana in 4A, Riverside in 3A and Freedom in 2A — are all trying to double their title pleasures.

They are joined in Happy Valley by the WPIAL’s No. 3 team out of Class A — Eden Christian Academy.

The WPIAL has never had more than three PIAA baseball champions in one year.

That record was set in 2018 when Canon-McMillan in 6A, Ringgold in 4A and Vincentian Academy in Class A all captured state gold.

Here are the sites and times for the PIAA finals on Thursday and Friday, along with the results from the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals of the state baseball playoffs.
