WPIAL Class A final notebook: OLSH’s Bradley moves up to No. 4 on career passing list

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart quarterback Tyler Bradley’s 169 passing yards in Saturday’s WPIAL Class A championship game victory over Rochester gave him 8,328 yards for his career, good enough for fourth place on the all-time WPIAL list.

Bradley passed Pine-Richland’s Phil Jurkovec, who accumulated 8,205 yards for the Rams last season. Next up in the No. 3 spot is Sto-Rox’s Lenny Williams with 8,508 yards.

Bradley has 3,228 yards this season.

Coming up short

While OLSH won Saturday in its first title game appearance, Rochester is now 7-6-1 all time in WPIAL title games. The Rams tied Westinghouse, 0-0, in the 1921 championship before that school joined the Pittsburgh City League.

Missing the action

Those sitting on the half of Heinz Field closest to the Allegheny River didn’t see any action on their end of the grid in the first quarter. Every play took place in the half of the field closest to the “T” line. OLSH won the coin toss and deferred. Rochester fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, but OLSH was stopped on downs at the Rams 3. After a couple of short punts from each team, play was maintained on the same end of the field.

Defensive stalwart

Leading the way defensively for the Chargers was senior linebacker Matt Gautner, who was credited with 16 unassisted and three assisted tackles.

Injury delay

The game was held up during the second quarter when OLSH linebacker Noah Campalong sustained an ankle injury.

Campalong was taken away on a cart.

“When he went down, we said we’re doing this for Noah,” senior Richard Banks said. “We just went out there and played the way Noah would have played.”

The Chargers scored on the following play.

The severity of the injury was unknown immediately after the game.

All the Rochester players on the field wished Campalong well as he was being carted off the field.

Taking a break

OLSH will get a bye from the PIAA playoffs next weekend. The Chargers will next be in action Nov. 30 or Dec. 1 against either Farrell, Smethport, Coudersport or Shade in the state semifinals.
