Reed Fenton

School: Latrobe

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Fenton, a Lehigh commit, scored 42 points and knocked down 10 3-pointers to lead Latrobe (2-0) to a 90-70 win over Altoona at the Canon-McMillan tournament Friday. He added 23 points in a 72-20 win over Canon-McMillan on Saturday. Last season, Fenton averaged 22 points, 4.5 assists and three steals.

“It was a good win. Altoona was a good team. They played us hard. We had a lot of players in foul trouble. That helped with our bench stepping up and getting some playing time,” Fenton said.

What made you commit to Lehigh?

I wanted to go to Lehigh for the good academics since I will major in chemical engineering. I really like Coach Reed and his style of play. It was a nice place to be, and it felt right.

What goes through your mind when you have a performance like one against Altoona?

You want to start off by shooting open shots and hitting them with confidence. It was good to start off hot and stay hot for most of the night. I felt like every shot was going in, and I had to keep it up.

What is it like to play alongside someone like Bryce Butler?

It’s pretty awesome. It’s like having a one-two punch. It’s almost like Jake (Bliss) and Austin (Butler). I think our chemistry is great, and we play well off each other.

What did the team learn from theloss to Mt. Lebanon in the quarterfinals last season?

You got to come out every game and be ready to play hard. They took it to us right from the start. We have to play hard every game.

Who is your favorite athlete?

Kawhi Leonard. I think he’s the best defensively in the league, and he can put up 40 on offense. He’s the best two-way player and I think he’s awesome at what he does.

Maggie Moore

School: Southmoreland

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Moore, a Naval Academy recruit, recorded two double-doubles to start the season for Southmoreland (3-0). Moore had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 53-32 win over Burrell at the Southmoreland tournament Friday. She scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 60-47 win over West Greene on Saturday.

“I thought the team had started on a good note. We had good energy. We’re really working well together as a team,” Moore said.

What made you commit to the Naval Academy?

It’s an amazing opportunity. I love the coaching staff and players. I get to play a high level basketball while learning at a prestigious school.

What parts of your game did you work on during the offseason?

I was working on my outside shot. I knew coming into the season I would get double and triple teamed. I was working on the 3-ball and working on my ball-handing skills.

What will the team need to do to earn a playoff spot this season?

We need to keep working together. We have a good group of freshmen, and I hope they continue to step up. We need to make our outside shots, and everyone needs to contribute so we don’t have to rely on one person.

What is your earliest memory of playing basketball?

I didn’t start playing basketball until ninth grade. I didn’t know what a foul shot was and how to take the ball out of bounds. I was a swimmer my whole life, so it was a big adjustment.

What made you decide to pick basketball over swimming?

There were some coaching problems when it came to swimming, so I was looking for a sport to try. Since I’m so tall, I thought I’d try out basketball. It just ended up working out for me.
