Girls basketball: Sewickley Academy meets Rochester in key early-season section contest

The Sewickley Academy and Rochester girls basketball teams are two of three with 1-0 records in Section 1-1A, and the Panthers and Rams meet Monday evening at 7:30 at Rochester.

Sewickley Academy, 3-1 overall, captured its section opener last Thursday with a 43-39 victory at Vincentian Academy. It won a close game after falling by just two points in nonsection play at Riverside on Dec. 10.

Rochester’s section victory, also last Thursday, made headlines as it came against Cornell by a score of 92-3. The Rams suffered a 52-45 loss to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in nonsection play Saturday and is 2-3 overall.

QV girls go for two in a row

After a 51-47 win over New Castle in its Section 2-4A opener last Thursday, one which stopped a two-game losing streak, the Quaker Valley girls basketball team hosts Blackhawk on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Quakers, 2-2 overall, had come close to a victory Dec. 10 against Moon, but they suffered a 46-44 loss to the Tigers.

Blackhawk is 3-1 overall with wins over Canon-McMillan, OLSH and Quigley Catholic by an average of 31 points. The Cougars only loss came by just two points to Norwin.

QV hockey hopes to move up standings

The Quaker Valley hockey team will try to inch closer to fourth place in the Northwest Section of Varsity AA as it takes on Franklin Regional on Monday at 7 p.m. at Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale.

The Quakers, 2-8-0-1 overall, are tied for fifth in the Northwest, four points behind fourth-place Moon (4-4-0-1).

Last week, QV hung close with Latrobe, first in the Southeast (8-2), before falling 6-3. The Quakers, on Dec. 3, topped Penn-Trafford (5-5, fifth in Southeast) by a 5-3 score.
