Sewickley Academy hockey back in action

The Sewickley Academy hockey team returns from a 21-day holiday break Monday at 9:15 p.m. with a PIHL Varsity A game against Freeport at Robert Morris University’s Colonials Arena.

The Panthers, 6-5 overall, defeated Deer Lakes 7-5 in their last game Dec. 17. They have alternated wins and losses over their previous five games.

Sewickley Academy’s 12 points places it in fifth place in the North Division, two points behind North Hills (7-4) and two points ahead of Freeport (5-6).

QV hopes to maintain win streak

The Quaker Valley girls basketball team hopes to extend its four-game winning streak Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Keystone Oaks in a Section 2-4A contest.

The Quakers, 6-3 overall, upped their section record to 2-1 last Thursday with a 44-41 victory over Hopewell.

Keystone Oaks is 2-2 in Section 2 play, one-half game behind QV in the standings. The Eagles’ most recent outing was a 54-46 nonsection loss to Trib HSSN 4A No. 1 North Catholic on Saturday at the Don Graham Classic at North Catholic High School.

Quaker boys squad wins Round 1 versus Hurricanes

The Quaker Valley boys basketball team defended its Trib HSSN 4A No. 1 ranking with its 19-point victory over No. 2 New Castle on Friday.

The Hurricanes had won five in a row since a six-point loss to 6A Peters Township, and the Quakers had rolled through its first eight opponents by an average of 18 points.

QV and New Castle (7-2, 2-1) will meet again Jan. 29 at Quaker Valley.

The Quakers (9-0, 3-0) host Hopewell (4-7, 0-3) on Tuesday before a game at Blackhawk (3-7, 1-2) on Friday and a home contest against Ambridge (7-4, 2-0) on Jan. 15.
