Darnel Howell

School: Monessen

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Howell scored 26 points to lead Monessen (6-5, 5-0) to a 84-23 win over Avella in Section 2-A action Jan. 8.

“We are playing together more as a team, rebounding better and getting a lot of easy buckets. Playing good defense helps a lot as well,” Howell said.

What are your college plans for next year?

I have a couple of Division III colleges I’m talking to at this time. I’m thinking of playing either football or basketball. I’m keeping my options open and seeing what happens.

What did the team learn from the three losses to start the season?

We were clicking and playing like a team. We weren’t running the plays. We started to listen our coach, things started to get better and we started to win.

How have things been under first-year coach Dan Bosnic?

At first, we didn’t know how he was going to be. We started to go along with what he had to say, and I think we will make it far this season.

What will be the key to get out the first round of the playoffs this season?

We got to keep working. Last year, we weren’t playing together. It was one or two people scoring. We did play team basketball, which is needed in order to win the WPIAL. This year, everyone is scoring rebounding and defense.

Who is your favorite athlete?

LeBron James. He’s just a great athlete and some one good to look up to. He does it all. He scores, he rebounds, plays good defense and passes the ball.

Emily Brozeski

School: Norwin

Sport: Basketball

Year: Senior

Claim to fame: Brozeski, who averages 11.6 points, scored 22 to lead Norwin (11-1, 4-1) to a 60-49 win over Butler in Section 1-6A action Jan. 7.

“As a team, we worked really well together. We created for each other. We did well as team passing it and playing for each other,” Brozeski said.

What made you decide on committing to Duquesne for track and field?

I felt at home when I was on campus. I want to major in graphic design or digital media arts. The campus is in the city, and it has a lot of connections for my major.

What did the team learn from the loss to North Allegheny?

We thought we played well together as team, but our rebounding wasn’t where we wanted it to be. We need to make smarter decisions towards the end of the game.

What is it like to play for your uncle?

It’s interesting and a great experience. He pushes me to be the best that I can be like anybody else. It’s easy for our grandparents, so they can watch both of us.

How does basketball help you with track and field?

I think it helps with my athleticism. I feel like it helps to play multiple sports. When it’s time to focus on track, it will push me to focus on track and not get tired of one thing. It will be my first time running indoor track since I play basketball.

If you had a chance to meet anyone in history, who would it be?

I would say I want to meet Sydney McLaughlin, who is an Olympic track athlete. I want to know how she felt to go to the Olympics at the age of 16 and how she got to her fullest potential.
