High school roundup for Jan. 17, 2019: Penn-Trafford girls upset No. 2 Penn Hills

The No. 2-ranked Penn Hills girls basketball team had won six straight games and was unbeaten through the first round of play in Section 3-5A. Then the Indians went to Penn-Trafford.

Stephanie O’Donnell scored 11 points to lead the host Warriors to a 42-38 overtime win over the Indians (11-4, 7-1) Thursday night.

Penn Hills’ Adia Brisker hit a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime, but Penn-Trafford (7-7, 4-4) outscored the Indians, 5-1, in the extra frame.

Norwin 72, Pine-Richland 25 — No. 4 Norwin (13-1, 7-1) held Pine-Richland to single-digit scoring in each quarter en route to a Section 1-6A win. Olivia Gribble and Danielle Rosso each had 15 points, and Emily Brozeski added 13 for the Knights. Ekaterini Balouris had 13 for Pine-Richland (3-12, 1-7).

North Allegheny 54, Shaler 28 — Lizzy Groetsch had 20 points, and Brynn Serbin added 13 as No. 1 North Allegheny (15-0, 8-0) scored a Section 1-6A win.

Mt. Lebanon 44, Connellsville 30 — Ashley Connor’s 17 points paced Mt. Lebanon (7-8, 6-2) in a Section 2-6A victory. The Blue Devils led 28-10 at halftime.

Upper St. Clair 56, Canon-McMillan 45 — Sarah Price tallied 26 points for Upper St. Clair (8-6, 5-3) in a Section 2-6A victory.

West Allegheny 55, Trinity 42 — Claire Mercuio scored 18 points to lift West Allegheny (8-5, 3-5) to a Section 1-5A victory.

North Catholic 68, Indiana 22 — Tess Myers had 14 points, and Dani Short added 12 as No. 1 North Catholic (12-1, 8-0) won in Section 1-4A.

Hopewell 52, Ambridge 40 — Siara Conley had 26 points as Hopewell (5-8, 2-5) claimed a Section 2-4A win.

Washington 57, Brownsville 37 — Carley Allen scored 16 points, and Tamia Russell added 14 as No. 5 Washington (12-3, 7-1) won a Section 2-3A game.

East Allegheny 54, Steel Valley 36 — Abby Henderson had 28 points to lift East Allegheny (9-4, 5-3) to a win in Section 3-3A.

OLSH 54, Aliquippa 27 — Haley Hamilton had 16 points, and Maddie Hoff added 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 3 OLSH (11-3, 8-0) to a win in Section 1-2A.

Frazier 53, Chartiers-Houston 22 — Brooke Poling had 19 points as Frazier (10-5, 6-1) won in Section 3-2A.

Bethel Park 64, Hempfield 32 — Maria Cerro had 10 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter to lead No. 3 Bethel Park (12-1, 7-1) to a Section 2-6A victory. Maddie Dziezgowski added 18 points for the Black Hawks.

Sarah Liberatore had 19 points for Hempfield (6-7, 1-7), which fell behind 21-10 in the first quarter.

Freeport 47, Greensburg Salem 33 — Samantha Clark scored 22 points in No. 4 Freeport’s Section 1-4A victory. Sidney Shemanski scored 10 points for Freeport (11-2, 7-1). Megan Kallock scored 15 points for Greensburg Salem (7-7, 3-5).

Belle Vernon 52, Ringgold 39 — Rachel Wobrak scored 20 points to carry Belle Vernon (8-6, 5-3) to a Section 3-4A win. The Leopards pulled away with a 16-4 run in the second quarter.

Elizabeth Forward 62, Mt. Pleasant 47 – Bri Spirnak had 16 points to lift Elizabeth Forward (9-5, 7-1) to a Section 3-4A win over Mt. Pleasant (4-11, 2-6).

Southmoreland 48, West Mifflin 44 — Maggie Moore scored 17 points, as No. 5 Southmoreland (13-2, 7-1) won in Section 3-4A. The Scotties opened a 13-5 lead in the first quarter. Shelby Genes had 17 points for West Mifflin (5-7, 4-4).

Jeannette 55, Springdale 21 — Dymond Crawford had 31 points and 11 rebounds to guide Jeannette (3-11, 2-5) to a win in Section 2-2A. Crawford, who added six steals and two blocks, needs 24 points to reach 1,000 for her career. Caitlyn Ullger had 11 points to lead Springdale (0-14, 0-7).

Ligonier Valley 49, Northern Cambria 16 — Alexia Boyd had 18 points, and Destiny Sheriff added 11 as Ligonier Valley (2-12, 2-7) won a District 6 Heritage Conference game.

Apollo-Ridge 58, Burrell 28 — Rylee Eaton led a trio of Apollo-Ridge players in double figures with 13 points as the Vikings (10-4, 4-4) rolled to a Section 1-4A win. Maddy Marks added 12 points and Liz Penrose had 10 as Apollo-Ridge took a 16-5 lead after the first quarter and widened it to 32-14 by halftime. Kaylen Sharrow scored a game-high 14 points for Burrell (4-9, 2-6), which also got 10 from Anna Novak.

Deer Lakes 54, South Allegheny 18 — Abby Buechel scored 22 points, all in the second and third quarters, and hit six 3-pointers as Deer Lakes breezed past South Allegheny in Section 3-3A play. Reese Hasley chipped in 12 points for Deer Lakes (10-3, 6-2). Taylor Lucas scored 11 points for South Allegheny (2-12, 1-7).

Knoch 50, Highlands 16 Knoch took a 30-6 lead into halftime and cruised to a Section 1 4-A win over Highlands. Nevaeh Ewing and Lauren Cihanski scored 10 points each for Knoch (7-7, 5-3), which shut out Highlands in the first and third quarters. Sarah Sawhook scored six points to lead Highlands (2-11, 0-8).

Fox Chapel 46, Butler 20 — Domenica Delaney scored 12 points as Fox Chapel defeated Butler in Section 1-6A play. Gabby Guerrieri and Ellie Schwartzman scored 11 points each for Fox Chapel (10-4, 5-3). Butler drops to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in section play with the loss.

Shady Side Academy 68, Valley 20 — Arianna Goitz scored a game-high 27 points as No. 3 Shady Side Academy defeated Valley in Section 3-3A play. Catherine Jewart added 13 points for Shady Side Academy (12-1, 8-0). Deyonna Jones led Valley (2-13, 0-8) with seven points.

Mars 59, Kiski Area 35 — Tai Johnson led a trio of Mars players in double figures with 20 points as the Planets cruised past Kiski Area in Section 2-5A play. Bella Pelaia scored 14 points and Mara Fuller added 11 for Mars (11-3, 5-2). Hannah Potter scored 16 points for Kiski Area (3-10, 0-7).

Boys basketball

Norwin 59, Elizabeth Forward 44 Logan Liebdzinski and Jayden Walker each scored 14 points to lead Norwin (7-6) to a nonsection victory. The Knights led 33-17 at halftime.

Steel Valley 63, Valley 48 — Camden Polak scored 20 points as Steel Valley defeated Valley in Section 3-3A play. Connor Vehec scored 16 points and Connor Rossey added 14 points for Steel Valley (8-7, 4-3). Deonte Ross scored 16 points to lead Valley (4-8, 4-3), which dropped its third consecutive game.
