High school roundup for Feb. 8, 2019: Sewickley Academy boys beat No. 1 OLSH

Just in time to give the WPIAL committee something to think about when they decide the postseason pairings next week, the Sewickley Academy boys basketball team capped off the Section 3-2A schedule with a 71-66 victory over No. 1 OLSH on Friday night.

Isiah Warfield had 30 points, and Max Belt added 13 for the No. 5-ranked Panthers (12-7, 9-3), who avenged a 77-69 loss to the Chargers from Jan. 15. Sewickley Academy has won three straight games.

Austin Wigley had 35 points for OLSH (18-2, 11-1), which had won its past nine games.

Thomas Jefferson 70, West Mifflin 68 — Isaac McNeil had 19 points to lead Thomas Jefferson (11-10, 6-8) to a Section 2-5A win that clinched a playoff berth for the Jaguars.

McKeesport 58, Gateway 50 — Thomas Wyatt had 16 points as playoff-bound McKeesport (11-9, 8-4) won in Section 1-5A.

Penn Hills 63, Woodland Hills 57 — Tyree Spencer had 24 points as No. 3 Penn Hills (18-3, 11-0) won a Section 1-5A game.

Chartiers Valley 50, West Allegheny 44 — Brayden Reynolds had 17 points, and Joe Pipilo added 15 as No. 4 Chartiers Valley (16-4, 11-3) won in Section 2-5A.

Moon 56, Montour 48 — Connor Ryan had 18 points to guide No. 2 Moon (21-1, 13-1) to a Section 2-5A win.

Mars 68, Hampton 49 — Michael Carmody had 22 points to pace No. 1 Mars (21-1, 14-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Andrew Recchia surpassed 1,000 career points in the win.

Blackhawk 56, Beaver 29 — Ryan Heckathron had 15 points as Blackhawk (9-12, 5-7) clinched a playoff berth in Section 2-4A.

Central Valley 53, Hopewell 48 — Justin Pyle-Thompson had 16 points as Central Valley (7-13, 4-8) won in Section 2-4A.

Aliquippa 58, Beaver Falls 50 — M.J. Devonshire had 19 points as No. 2 Aliquippa (14-7, 10-2) won a Section 1-3A matchup.

Lincoln Park 74, Neshannock 53 — Casey Oliver and Isiah Smith each had 15 points as No. 1 Lincoln Park (18-3, 11-1) won in Section 1-3A.

Fort Cherry 66, Carlynton 57 — Thomas Hamilton had 21 points, and Maddox Truschel added 18 as Fort Cherry (5-16, 2-10) won a Section 2-3A game. Chauncey Mickens scored 27 points for Carlynton (5-16, 1-11).

North Catholic 85, Avonworth 52 — Isaiah Jackson and Jackson Davida each had 16 points as No. 3 North Catholic (17-3, 11-1) won in Section 2-3A.

Seton LaSalle 71, Keystone Oaks 51 — Dylan Preston had 17 points, and Michael Bigley added 14 as No. 4 Seton LaSalle (16-3, 11-1) won in Section 2-3A.

Winchester Thurston 57, Summit Academy 43 — In Section 1-2A, Langston Moses had 15 points to lift No. 3 Winchester Thurston (15-5, 10-3) to its first section championship in program history.

South Side Beaver 50, Burgettstown 49 — Logan English had 18 points, and Jake McDougal added 17 as No. 4 South Side Beaver (16-6, 8-4) picked up a Section 3-2A win.

West Greene 67, Jefferson-Morgan 45 — Ben Jackson had 21 points and Nathan Brudnock added 20 as West Greene (7-12, 5-7) clinched the fourth playoff spot in Section 2-A. Jackson added 12 rebounds in the win.

Butler 77, Obama Academy 60 — Ethan Mortan had 19 points, and Devin Carney added 18 as No. 5 Butler (16-4) won a nonsection game. Dashon Cruz had 26 points, including four 3-pointers, for Obama Academy (8-9).

Peters Township 76, Connellsville 52 — Colin Cote had 30 points, including eight 3-pointers, as Peters Township (13-7) rolled to a nonsection win.

Pine-Richland 76, McDowell 64 — Dan Petcash had 23 points to carry Class 6A No. 3 Pine-Richland (19-2) to a nonsection win.

Franklin Regional 61, Kiski Area 29 — Aidan Wiley had a game-high 13 points for Franklin Regional (16-6, 11-3) in a Section 2-5A victory. Kiski Area (4-17, 3-11) was held to single-digit point totals in all four quarters.

Frazier 61, Southmoreland 58 (OT) — Justin Novak had 23 points to lead Frazier (6-14, 4-8) to an upset win in Section 4-3A. Cade Richter had 19 points for playoff-bound Southmoreland (12-9, 7-5).

Monessen 82, Mapletown 23 — In Section 2-A, Darnel Howell had 17 points, and Devin Whitlock added 15 as No. 5 Monessen (14-7, 12-0) earned a victory.

Mt. Pleasant 72, Geibel 58 — Jacob Johnson had 22 points, and Luke Brandner added 15 as Mt. Pleasant (5-16) won a nonsection matchup. Enzo Fetsko had 24 points for Geibel (11-11).

Baldwin 67, Norwin 50 — Troy Lanier had 16 points as Baldwin (8-14) won a nonsection game. Jayden Walker scored 12 points for Norwin (8-12).

Penn-Trafford 58, Hollidaysburg 51 — Kevin Stinelli had 22 points to lead Penn-Trafford (13-8) to a nonsection victory that served as a tune-up for the WPIAL playoffs.

Uniontown 72, Greensburg Salem 59 — Isaiah Melvin had 21 points as Class 4A No. 4 Uniontown (17-3) won a nonsection game. Ryan Thomas poured in 27 points for Greensburg Salem (8-13).

Apollo-Ridge 63, Propel Braddock Hills 46 Apollo-Ridge boys basketball did its part on Friday night, but it did not get the help it need to make the postseason.

The Vikings scored a victory, but Springdale’s 55-48 win over Riverview eliminated them from playoff contention.

Apollo-Ridge (12-10, 8-6) and Springdale (12-8, 8-6) finished tied for fourth in the Section 1-2A standings, but the Dynamos have the tiebreaker after sweeping the season series.

Keighton Reese scored 26 points for Apollo-Ridge, which led 38-11 at halftime. Bobby Mangan added 10 points.

Jayvan Tarver led Propel Braddock Hills (3-17, 3-11) with 11 points.

Fox Chapel 61, Upper St. Clair 57 — Ryan Kerr led four Fox Chapel players in double figures with 15 points to help the Foxes score a nonsection victory over Class 6A No. 4 Upper St. Clair (19-3) at A.J Palumbo Center. Arnold Vento (14 points), Noah Marks (13) and Sam Brown (12) also were in double digits for the Foxes (15-6). Tanner Gensler led the Panthers with 20 points.

Valley 80, Burrell 70 — Nyjewel Carter scored 25 points in the Vikings’ Section 3-3A win. David Primus recorded 14 points, and Deonte Ross added 12 for Valley (8-10, 8-4). Logan Bitar scored 29 points, and Logan Phillips scored 15 for Burrell (5-14, 4-8).

Shady Side Academy 56, Deer Lakes 45 — Mike George scored a game-high 20 points in Shady Side Academy’s Section 3-3A win over No. 5 Deer Lakes. The Indians capped their regular season 9-11 overall and 7-5 in section play. Brad Perrotte scored 15 points, and Jared Colton added 10 for Deer Lakes (14-6, 10-2).

Shaler 69, Plum 56 — Lamar Whiting led Plum (5-16, 5-9) with 20 points in a Section 2-5A loss at Shaler (14-6, 9-4). Connor Moss added 10 points for the Mustangs. Mekhi Reynolds scored 20 points for Shaler, and Colton Schott added 18 points with four 3-pointers.

Girls basketball

Armstrong 39, Knoch 33 — The Knights dropped a nonsection contest but qualified for the playoffs with help from Freeport’s victory over Apollo-Ridge. Knoch (9-13, 7-7) and Apollo-Ridge (15-7, 7-7) tied for fourth in Section 1-4A after splitting the season series. Lauren Cihonski and Nevaeh Ewing scored 12 points apiece for Knoch. Jaylen Callipare led Armstrong with 14 points.

Norwin 46, Fox Chapel 36 — Olivia Gribble had 12 points to pace No. 2 Norwin to a Section 1-6A win.

Norwin (20-1, 13-1) and North Allegheny (19-1, 12-1) finished as co-section champions. Ellie Schwartzman had 10 points for the playoff-bound Foxes (14-7, 8-6), who finished fourth in Section 1.

North Allegheny 69, North Hills 28 – Rachel Martindale had 16 points, and Brynn Serbin scored 14 as No. 3 North Allegheny (19-1, 12-1) won in Section 1-6A.

Franklin Regional 60, Kiski Area 20 — Cali Konek scored 16 points as No. 5 Franklin Regional won in Section 2-5A play. Jordan Yaniga scored 15 points for Franklin Regional (16-5, 10-2). Dara Zelonka and Dejah Burnett scored eight points each for Kiski Area (4-16, 0-12).

Penns Manor 51, Blairsville 41 — Abby Tomayko scored 15 points to lead Penns Manor (20-1) to a victory over Blairsville (19-4) in the Heritage Conference championship game at IUP.

Lauren Bagley added 12 points, and Autumn Fennell chipped in 11 for top-seeded Penns Manor, which avenged a loss to Blairsville in the 2018 championship game.
