No. 10 seed Winchester Thurston won a foul-plagued WPIAL Class 2A first-round game as freshman Maya Roberts scored 28 points, including four inside the final 33 seconds to seal a 60-56 victory over Frazier at Charleroi.

Roberts’ steal and layup with 32.5 seconds to go gave the Bears (11-9) a 58-56 lead.

Frazier led 44-40 after three quarters before it was outscored 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Winchester Thurston made 24 of 44 free throws, including 12 of 19 in the final frame. Roberts made 15 of 21 from the line.

Brooke Poling led Frazier (14-8) with 20 points and Sierra Twigg added 13.

Combined, the teams made 37 of 65 foul shots.

Winchester Thurston will play No. 2 Brentwood (17-3) in the quarterfinals Thursday at a time and site to be determined.

Laurel 63, Chartiers-Houston 16 — Caroline Gibson had 25 points, including five 3-pointers, as No. 3 Laurel (19-4) rolled to a WPIAL Class 2A first-round win at Mt. Lebanon. No. 14 Chartiers-Houston finished the season 8-15.

Laurel, which opened the game on a 22-7 run, had 10 3-pointers as a team. Laurel will play No. 6 South Side Beaver in the quarterfinals Thursday at a time and site to be determined.

Serra Catholic 59, Sto-Rox 29 — Gigi Mele-Madigan had 19 points, and Rayna Andrews scored 12 as No. 5 Serra Catholic (18-4) cruised to victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs at Peters Township. The Eagles held a 29-10 advantage in the second half.

Mariah Salters had 14 points, and Alashia Washington added 11 for No. 12 Sto-Rox (10-13).

Serra Catholic will play OLSH in the quarterfinals Thursday.
